I am after a spotting scope for competitive target shooting, I want to see my hits on paper targets 6mm bullets holes at distances of 200-300 &500yds, I presently have the C-90 and with the standard eyepc (32mm) which is 38X I can get by at 200yds and sometimes 300yds depends on conditions, I was wondering If I would be better to trade up to a Celestron Ultima 80

thanks
Chet

Magnification is a function of FL - the 80mm will have less power as it's FL is less. Why not just get a few more eyepieces for the c-90 to increase power? Alot cheaper then a new scope and more efficent.

Hello Chet,I agree with Adam.I have a ETX 90 and can see 22 cal. out to 300 yds. with about 50 power.

Just tried a 15mm EP in a C-90 and it works fine for about 300 yards. The ultima 80 has less than half the focal length so I doubt that would be an improvement. If you got a zoom it would be "mission accomplished", and cheaper. At about 100 power the heat waves take over. Stick with the C-90 unless you want a new toy.

Chet,You could use what 11 time National High Power Rifle Champion David Tubb uses ,that is 100 mm angled Optolyth spotting scope or a Kowa 82 mm angled spotting scope. He has them mounted so that he doesn't have to move much at all[or not at all] to look through them. These scope are made so you can rotate the eyepiece for more comfort.
