Help Great Blue Herons ate my small pond Koi fish

Posted By Steven Moore

The other night I saw a Great Blue Heron fly over before dark, well today while we were in town for a hour and came home there was a Great Blue Heron standing at the edge of our small home built pond [15 ft round, deepest part is 4 ft.].My wife didn't know what it was,but I knew and why it was there.I chased it away, but I think they ate our [about 6 inch long] 5 fish 3 Koi and 2 Goldfish.I worked on the pond the other day and it is still cloudy so I can not see the bottom, but none of the fish came to eat.I didn't realize how much I was attached to these fish until this happened.I not sure what to do if I buy more fish, they might end up birdfood.Any thoughts on this other than shooting the birds, which is what I would like to do.

Re: Only ducks allowed

Hi Andy,We still have Great Blues coming once in a while, but I put fishing line strung around and have been keeping watch.I was thinking of shooting off shotgun when they come around, not at them of course, just to scare them more.I live in a rural area.I still can not believe the four remaining fish hide for three weeks after their buddy got ate.We thought they were all gone.Good Luck.

fluid head tripods

Posted By Steven Moore

Hello All,I have a video camera tripod that has fluid motion head and when I try to use it with Pentax 20x60 binoculars in cool to cold weather it is just about useless, doesn't want to move.I guess the oil inside the head gets too thick. The name on the tripod head is AMBICO.I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem or is this just because this is cheaper tripod and I HAVE NEVER USED A BOGEN [or any other brand]fluid motion head so I wouldn't know?.Thanks?

What's the deal with fluid head tripods and a fix

Posted By Steven Moore

I didn't want to reply to myself again [might become a habit]so I started another thread.I got tired of this cheap fluid head tripod,so I disjointed the head and found that it had the glue grease in it,used nail polish remover [don't tell my wife] to clean all this crap out and relubed it with Sil-Glyde,man what a difference, smooth as silk.Set it on back porch at 35 degree F and it still worked smooth. This head has just about all plastic parts and I was just wondering if the "good" tripod heads have machined metal parts? Thanks for any information and thanks for reading this.

Re: ETX as spotter question.

Posted By Steven Moore

Hello Hugh,I have an ETX 90 RA I use as a spotter.I use it the most to look at 22 cal.>30 cal. bullet holes and it excels at that.I measured close focus and it was something like 7 ft. or so.I also use it to look at wildlife with true colors. The down side of this scope for birds or other animals is the narrow view.I take the OTA off the fork mount when I want to use a tripod and I weighed the OTA with eyepiece and it was 44 oz. if I remember right and it is not that hard to remove from fork mount.I would look for a used ETX 90 RA or what ever instead of buying new as a spotter and you could get the adapter that Meade sells to orient the image.I would buy another one of these if that answers your question about how I like it.I don't have any experience with the Orion Maks but I wouldn't be afraid to buy one for this use.

Takahashi FS-102 for sale on Astromart

Posted By Steven Moore

Hello,I just bought a Universal Astronomics Unistar & HD surveyer's tripod off of Larry Wolken that was in excellent condition. He lives about 40 miles from my place and while I was there he showed me his Takahashi FS-102 he has for sale on here #450192 and it looks brand new to me,I don't think he used very much at all,the lens was immaculate as was everything else.I would of bought it but don't have the $ wink .Larry is a very nice guy and he also has Canon 15x50IS binoculars that he left me look through,it was raining outside so didn't get to use them very much, very nice.Geez now he has me wanting a Tak 102 and Canon 15x50IS binoculars. wink
