She was the mayor of the town I live in (Wasilla)... can't believe the news today. Alaska generally loves her, but Alaska is a republican fortress.
Here she is looking through an AP Traveler (photo credit: Astromart member Chris Erickson)

...does anyone think McCain is a statesman who evaluated all candidates to pick the person best qualified to assume the presidency in the event something should happen to him?
Let's see...
Former city council member of a small town.
Former mayor of that small town.
Less than 2 years as governor of one of the smallest states.
And that's..it.
Oh yeah, that's presidential material, all right. Compared to her, George Bush looked like he had relevant experience when he was elected. Foreign policy? Well, she lives closer to Russia than any other candidate. So much for the Republican argument about Obama's lack of experience.
Palin's selection was pure stunt casting, a political act designed solely to ease McCain's election, not to provide for the continuity of the government should anything befall the geezer. What does she have going for her?
She's a woman. Woos Clinton's disaffected gynophilac supporters. Climbs onto the "historic candidate" bandwagon.
Has a kid about to go to Iraq. Neutralizes Biden on that issue. I wonder how many politicians McCain had to check to find any whose kids are in any danger of going there?
Without these two factors, there's no way she ever would have been selected. Can anyone honestly say she's the candidate best qualified to assume the presidency? This is a purely political choice, made with no regard for the welfare of the nation. Obviously, Obama made his own political calculations when he chose Biden, but he also knew very well that Biden is suited and qualified to become President.
I wonder who McCain will announce for his cabinet...maybe Cheney's daughter? Get that Lesbian vote wrapped up too?
