Why do Atheists...

Today I decided to visit an atheist website. So I went to www.atheists.org to see what they talk about there. There are about 34 hyperlinks in the central frame of the from page of various current topics. To my surprise, a clear majority of those link were related in some way to religious activities.

So my question is, why do atheists spend so much time concerned with what non-atheist groups are doing? When I go to a Buddhist site or a Catholic site the vast majority of their front pages are dealing with topics related to what they are doing and not what non-Buddhist or non-Catholic groups are doing. I was expecting to find the band of atheists discussing and promoting their views, instead was more concerned with counterpoint to organizations or peoples of opposing viewpoints.

Always sends up a red flag for me when I see organizations doing mostly couterpointing of opposing views as it usually exhibits a level of extremism operating freely within the group. Is it because atheists have no views they hold in common except anti-views? This is a sincere question as I'm just not understanding why a group of people would organize as a lifestyle against something. Seems more productive to stress a lifestyle that is unique, has its own redeming attributes, something to be proud about and attract others instead of being so negative and anti this or that.

Disclaimer - I've not reviewed a bunch of sites out there and am going off of behaviors I see in this forum space and some major websites. I did note that some major websites had less anti-theist stuff (although still a lot), like www.atheistalliance.org, but just seemed to me that if the organization had the word atheist in its title it tended to have lots of religion counterpoint as its focus. If the organization did not highlight atheist in its title, like the Freethought Association of Canada or the European Humanist Federation, then these were more of what I expected, little religion counterpoint and expressing more of their own unique attributes instead. Anyway, found it curious.

My thinking:

I haven't spent much time cruising such websites but my guess is that they are mostly concerned with the political implications of the what the various churches are doing. The coalition between the Republican party and the fundamentalist Christian community has had a major influence on politics over the past 25 years or so.

On the other hand it might be because atheists are people who don't believe in a god rather than people who believe the question of whether a god exists is a non-question. The world goes around whatever you believe.

One website's forum is not a very good indication of what all atheists or even some atheists do or think.

If you want a reason _some_ atheists want to discuss religion, it's maybe because religion, or the religionists anyhow, SOME OF THEM, spend so much time trying to figure out how to change our minds. And bad-mouthing us to high heaven (can I use that word?) LOL!

Maybe if you-all stopped worrying so much about us, and stopped trying to inject your silly beliefs (in our opinion) into the public arena we'd stop worrying about _you_.

When you guys try to bring religion back into the public schools and into government, you shouldn't be surprised we are going to raise our voices about you. I know I will. wink

In my observation they haven't been concerned with what most non-atheist groups are doing... only those particular non-atheist groups that are fixated on converting them, converting their government, their schools, etc etc.

Religion doesn't exactly have a history of 'leaving people alone'.

I really doubt that any atheist group is going to get their panties in a twist over how many candles are being lit in front of the Virgin statue. Atheist groups actively work to discredit the religious beliefs that influence public policy, and as part of that effort, they might keep track of the latest efforts of various churches or religious groups.
The problem with Christians is their evangelism and the desire to insert their religious views into public law whenever possible. While I could care less what your personal beliefs are, I will certainly argue against them when they are being used to control my life.

1. Remove religion from our government.
2. Remove religion from our public schools.
3. Remove religion from science.
Then we will not be concerned at all with what non-atheists are doing. You can observe your myths all you want, and we won't care!

Robert

Should we also remove history from public schools as most of that is conjecture at best, and a lot of myth in there too. Probably should strongly caveat a lot of science in school as being not the truth of something but just a best probability -- something not conveyed most of the time.

Also, can't agree with all your "removes" until there is some qualification of what that means. Let's not forget that the US is a democracy where the majority rules as long as we stay within the confines of the established laws. And when you look at how this speration of church and state is framed, it's not many tiems what is implied in statements like your list.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Geez, if I substitute "creationist" for atheist" in your post: Is the pot calling the kettle black, or what? Fact is, that Web site seems to me to be mostly informational not confrontational. Just my opinion.

Good Question....

OK, I have two totaly unsupported ideas... but they make sense.

In my experience most athiests or agnostics were raised in one religion or another, so this could be a return to double check what's been going on without them.

Or, those who generate web-site traffic are the more politically active athiests. Not being a cohesive group, we only see these few.

Those we don't see may actually be the majority. They could be living happily next door without any desire to exchange views on political or religious matters.

Just food for thought.
