So if everyone did this, we might be able to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 2 or 3 percent. Granted that's if everyone in the country did this, and to start, no one had properly inflated tires. Our first baby step towards independence on foreign oil.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Of course this begs the question on where the next easy-to-do, affordable steps are.

Don't you miss those toddler cars that had no floors so you can make them move by running your feet. Made me so happy, healthy, and no CO2 emissions (except when I breathed). I miss being a little kid.

Thanks, that's pretty funny! You should play in comedy clubs.

Just a point of fact here, as far as I know we are not drilling in Alaska and not inflating our tires. However, gas is now falling out of the sky and I'm paying less than half of what I did only a short time ago.

That buys us a little extra time improve our gas efficiency or move to alternative modes of powering transportation. Another reason to do this will be to have an honest foreign policy. smile

"I hear you're mechanically inclined. Did you ever do anything with perpetual motion?"

"Yeah, I nearly had it a couple of times."

I agree. As far as I can tell we've only slightly reduced our demand and talked about doing something, anything. I realize this is the simple explanation and it's probably somewhat more complex, but hopefully, whatever we decide to do, we actually do it and not waste this opportunity.

As a former media planner for an ad agency, I am well aware of how difficult it is to word a survey in such a way as to obtain the answers you want. As the numbers for "Obama doing worse ..." begin to rise, I suspect those voting this way are not really answering the question. If you thought he would suck and you think he is doing just that then he's doing just what you thought he'd do, not worse. Geez Louise, he's only been in a few weeks, if Bush had a third term then I'm willing to wager the Obama Bashers would be saying, "Hey give him a chance, it only hit the fan a few months ago and everything will happen in good time". BTW I voted for neither Bush, Mac nor Obama. For the record, when Bush was elected he did exactly what I thought he'd do, well ok maybe a little worse, but I didn't know that until after a few months.

I'm the one who used the term moron, but I don't believe I called you one. But since we are going that road, so be it. Your comment about Obama saying we would save 3 to 4 percent of our fuel usage with good tire preasure and a tune-up is exacly on target. Because the amount of oil that we could expect to bring in from the north slope of Alaska was on the order of 2 to 3 percent of what we currently use. Amazing how that works, isn't it. But I'm sure you will find some way to twist this around and make it reflect your point of view that all concervationists are idiots. You may not believe in global warming, but it's important to note that we probably would not have had a 9/11 if we were not over there trying to suck out as much of that middle eastern oil as we can, not to mention the fact that we are still dancing to the tune of the OPEC players. Lots of strange instruments in that band.

If I were to judge from this thread, suggesting good auto maintenance back during the campaign is the most controversial thing Barack Obama has said or done. Huh, there must be nothing else to find fault with.

I can. As a result of that claim, McCain released the infamous "Tire Gauge" that had the words "Obama Energy Plan" on the side. I gave $50 as a campaign contribution so that I could get one of those tire gauges. McCain got the money. I never got the gauge.

Most people realize that tire preasure is a range and not a specific value. That range usually is plus or minus a couple of pounds. I doubt anyone ever thought that we could resolve our energy problems by this proposal. The point that the president was trying to make, which went right over the top of many heads, was that something as simple as proper inflation of tires and a regular tune-up would save about the same amount of energy as could be produced by tapping into one more of our unscathed natural wilderness areas. I think that the people who look at these comments and take them as literal solutions are the kind of people that scare me, and unfortunately there are a lot of people who get lost in the minutia. Pardon the spelling, the spell checker is not working.
