Ok guys.. here we go.. I don't know if this subject has been answered again but I'm running a little bit of time I don't have time to go through the posts.

So.. I'm about to buy a small APO for astrophotography. I also own an 8" Newtonian Skywatcher an an EQ6 Skyscan Pro.

I have two choices of APO's.

1. The newest ZenithStar II generation Doublet APO 80mm ED refractor. (1.25" Carbon Fiber plate 99% dielectric diagonal are included in the price)
Price: $600.

and

2. Astronomy Technologies Astro-Tech AT80EDT 80mm f/7 ED triplet apochromatic refractor with carbon fiber tube.
Price: $700

I know that the Astro-Tech is a triplet apochromatic which is better but I'd like to hear your opinions on this matter.

I'll be using it for prime focus astrophotography with a Canon 40D camera on my EQ6 Pro.

I don't know if the quality of optics of Astro-Tech is the same with WO. I've never read any reviews about Astro-Tech. So give me your lights on that.

Thank you for your time.

Clear Skies to all.

If you want to get really color free and sharp pictures, then you need a "True APO" that has really good optics. Most ED APOs have some sort of spread of the colors which is seen as a halo around bright stars when photographing.
The Triplet design does not mean it is a "True APO" though as there is more involved than just three lenses in the design that makes it APO.
It is hard to find an 80mm APO for under $1300 that is a really good APO new. APM has some very nice ones available, but the cost is 2x what you are looking at with the others.
William Options has a 90mm that is reported to be quite nice as well as a new 88mm, but I have not used one.
I have the William Optics 80mm f/6 Triplet Super APO that is quite nice and can sometimes be found used, but I do not think any are left unless APM or Mark at Teton can get one.
