I found some manufacturer of Lens or Mirror said on their ads like "Research Grade" optic. I really don't know what is a deffinition of research grade optic. Can any one please describe this? especially Roland Christien.

Thank you very much.

I believe this is nothing more than sales hype, with no specific meaning or definition applicable. smile

I agree with Floyd. Marketing research grade BS.

After all Galileo did important research with an instrument that by todays standards would be considered a joke (that's because it didn't have FPL53 glass, which, of course, any SERIOUS refractor HAS to have).

Orion Optics UK calls one of their lines of Newtonian optics "Research Grade". In their case it means 1/8 PV wavefront and a Zygo test certificate of the main mirror.

But anyone could call anything research grade.
