How important is it that the scope be centered?

In order to get my mounting plate to fit to my mount, I had to aling the 2 rings about 1/4 of an inch off the center line of the scope. So compared to a perfectly centered scope, imagine that my scope has been moved parallel to its length about 1/4". I assume the mount and the goto logic could care less? I have seen plates for mounting 2 scopes at a time side by side, and they are clearly 4 or 8 inches or so off dead center, so I assume that's fine?
