New Meade 5000 UWA 30mm

Last night at a club star party I finally got the chance to try a friends Meade 5000 UWA 30mm EP.
The thing is enormous! Yes, it is much bigger than the 31mm Nagler.
But, it is well corrected even in a f/4.3 Dob. The view was excellent, the edge was sharp and it seemed as bright as my 31mm Nagler.
The only drawback was the size and weight. The size made it difficult for you to get your face in position and the weight made some scope fall through without serious counter weights.
However, the EP performed much better than I would have predicted and I would say that it is very comparable to the 31mm Nagler.
Just be sure your scope can handle the weight issue and that your face will fit the Eye cup.

Thanks Floyd. I haven't really heard much about that eyepiece yet. Glad you liked it.

Hard to believe that there could be something out there that would be larger than the "TermiNagler"... 8O

Thanks for the brief report Floyd... 8)

Floyd,

I'm really surprised, pleasantly so, to hear it performed so well near the edges in your fast Dob. I bought a Series 5000 14mm UWA, here on Astromart, to compare with my 4000. I really like its compact size and rotating eyecup (not the grease of course) over the larger 4000 but I can only use it in my f9 refractor and f15 7" Mak. The stars are simply a mess near the edges in my f4.5 and f6 Newts.

Were you using a Parcor with the 31mm?

Jerry

p.s. So do you think we could impose on you to do a review of this line of eyepieces as well? grin I'd volunteer to send you my 14mm.
