Low power EP for F10 scope

I need a low power ep. Something above 28mm, maybe between 30-40. This should fill in my gap. I've been reading allot and one of my friends has a Siebert low power. He loves it but even he mentions the ghost issue on bright objects. So help me out here on some suggestions. I'm leaning Pentax XW, but have heard the Ultimas are good and would like to get a right fit here. I've done good so far at not having to sell after trying. I didn't like any of the Meade 5000 UW's. Most seemed to need proper head alignment with my glasses. I really want to go wow and this will probably be my most expensive piece, but hope not. Thanks folks, Joe Conway

I would vote for the 31mm Nagler, Pentax 30mm XW or maybe the Uwan 28mm EP for that focal length if money is not an object.
These are all great EPs with good wide field performance and coatings.
My recommendation is in that order too. grin

For the best recommendations you should also include what type/size scope this will be used with. Sounds likely this will be a Refractor or a Cat. Clarify this and you will get the best recommendations for your scope. Also, budget constraints may not be a bad thing to include also.

Hi:

With an F/10 scope, you have quite a few options. Most eyepieces work quite nicely at F/10 so you do not necessarily need to go the high budget route with the Pentaxes and/or Naglers.

I am assuming you have a 2 inch focuser so the Ultimas are not going to give you widest possible field of view.

You might look around a bit too. The 30mm 80 degree eyepieces sold under a variety of names are quite poor in an F/5 scope but as I recall, these are reputed to work quite well at F/10. I have tried mine a few times in my 4 inch F/10 Achromat.... These were cloned by Markus Ludes from the Widescan II eyepieces...

My bad, 9.25 SCT, 2 inch stuff. I have one lesson taken from this site, always think about the next scope. Another thing, money is no object. I always like saying that because it doesn't make sense.

Where my view on all this is different, I feel that EPs are your biggest investment. The scopes come and they go, but good EPs stay with you for a lifetime.
So, buying a good EP, like the 31mm Nagler or 30mm Pentax XW is an investment that will work with any scope that you might buy or use.
Other EPs will work fine in the f/10 and then not work well in an f/4-5 scope.
Buy now, buy later but sooner or later you end up with premium EPs.

If I ever had one lesson in life it is this, just buy it. I'm not saying live beyond your means though.

How many of us have talked ourselves out of a purchase only to regret it for years? I talked myself out of buying a stupid little incense burner for $45 from a pretty well known sculptor. Now they are history and I've spent more time on this "quest of stupidity" and why do I want one anyway while still looking for one.

So with this lesson in mind, I will spend more than I should on this ep, but with all of your suggestions, I can take the mean of all the suggestions and hopefully make this choice once.

See you all at the center of the meridian. No, not that one, next to crossing light with my little sign, "tired old astronomer needs ep".

How about something in the 40mm range like another person suggested??

I've had the Optiluxe, and yes while I hear it is great at longer FLs, I havean f/5 and it was only bearable. But good fit/finish, light, and optics good.

However, consider waiting a bit before you leap, especially if you wish to save some bucks. TMB Optical has come out with a new line called Paragon's. Thier 1st offering is a 40mm with 68deg afov. Initial reports (cloudy nights) say its color free and pinpoint to the edge, flat field, basically excellent. Supposed to be absolute premium glass and coatings. Initial price is $249. High Point Scientific is selling (i.e. taking orders). So promises to be something special in the 65deg afov competition.
