I have used an eyepiece on my scope that provided me with a 2.2 degree fov. I found this sufficient for easily locating objects (I have no computer). Do to off axis degradation, I am considering moving to an eyepiece with a little higher power, but the fov will only be 1.75 degrees.

I would be interested to know whether you feel that this will be adequate for easily locating objects. Because the 2.2 degrees was adequate, I have not used a finder scope.

Hard to say. You could try inserting a cardboard field stop into the old eyepiece to make its true field the same as the proposed new one. It won't have the higher mag, but it should tell you what the smaller true field will be like in a panning search.
