Mark Harry's 7" mirror is fabulous

Posted By Mike Hosea

Over the last couple of days I have been trying out the 7" f/6.7 I've been working on for 3 months or so and just completed. I'll probably write up some more about it and put some pictures up on my web page, but one thing I do want to say straight up is that Mark Harry's 7" mirror is fabulous. I had some well-timed good seeing tonight (finally), and contrast on Jupiter and Saturn was simply stunning.

That reminds me...suggestion for astromart

Posted By Mike Hosea

Noticed that somebody had to put in an ad to get feedback because they had deleted the ad before.

I used to just delete my ads when I had a sale but stopped for this reason. Should/could we have an option to mark an ad inactive even though its time has not run out yet? ...or is there some feature or procedure I'm missing.

Rick, is that your "Barlow" design?

Rick, is that a "Blakley" that Uranoport is selling?

Trouble with forum viewing preferences

Posted By Mike Hosea

I seem to be having difficulting making the forums display only posts in the last 12 hours, or day. I use the Flat, newest first option, and I get older messages, too.

Some new pictures on-line

Posted By Mike Hosea

I posted a few more pictures of my 7" f/6.7 and also added some shots of a little refractor I made awhile back out of surplus optics. Maybe it's interesting. Sorry the scopes are black--sometimes it's hard to make out the details, but I like the look and feel of that textured black paint.

Look for the links on my homepage:

Re: Monocentric anyone?

Posted By Mike Hosea

I've seen a monocentric, which is a cemented triplet design. I've never used one in a telescope, though, and I was told that this variety had a pretty obvious ghost image and very little eye relief. Your biggest problem with these eyepieces is finding them. I think this one was made by Intes, but Intes is not known for excellence in eyepiece manufacturing. I don't think eye relief is theoretically all that bad compared to Abbes and Plossls, so perhaps in medium and longer focal lengths it is tolerable.

The Tolles is a single, thick lens design and so is limited in its correction ability the way any single lens must be.

Re: Disappointed with Starmaster scope

I've never seen a Starmaster, but I've heard that the older ones are rough. Is this a late-model ELT or a recent one?
