Better than Naglers?

Im trying to trade Nagler 4's for other TV ep's I have never tried nor seen in person.

I can only conclude that the 11 Nagler original is far superior to the 12 T4.

The 32 Widefield is far superior in image quality to the 22 T4

The 55 Plossl is far superior to any T4 Nagler.

Why? Not one offer to trade, so they must feel they have the superior ep, and is a losing deal.

If Im trading a 5 year old modern design for a 25 year old obsolete design, I must be ripping people off, right? Or has the Ethos made the Type 4 undesirable? My understanding is incomplete.

Regards
John

People can be funny about trades. I also think it just comes down to laws of probability. Just think about it, you have to find someone who is thinking exactly like you, but in reverse. I had the 40mm wf and was looking to trade for the 32mm wf because I will be acquiring an f/5 LightBridge (currently have 8f6 dob) for 2 months...

I gave up and listed the 40mm for the amount that I paid for it...150 bucks...had it sold in 3 seconds flat. Hence the reason why I couldn't have my wallet out fast enough to buy your 35 pan. Haven's seen a 32mm wide field in a very long time.

One thing I have been noticing is that I've seen a lot of Panoptics for sale lately. Perhaps people are shelling out 600 buks for Ethos and selling their Naglers and Panoptics to do it. I dono, just my own crackpot theory. Myself, I'm one of those weideros that actually really enjoys the Panoptics. I find it hard to take everything of the 82 degree Naglers. If they had Panoptics in short focal lengths that had good eye relief, that's what I'd have in stead of my 13 and 7 T6s.

The 55-mm Plossl better? Waaallll...uh..."no."

The Naglers are superior to almost anything for general use. There are some eyepieces that are very close--the William Optics Uwans, for example, but when all is said and done, the Naglers step over the finish line just a wee bit before them, the Pentaxies, the Meade Ultrawides, etc., etc.

Or make that "did". Gotta be honest, muchacho: the Ethoses blow the doors off the Naglers. After observing with my 13-mm Ethos for a while on my 12.5-inch Dobbie and Tom Clark's (Tectron) 24-inch, I switched to Tom's 13 Nagler. It was like goin' back to a Plossl after the first time I used a Nagler way back when. No foolin'.

Trading is a nice idea but not an effective strategy. You are only appealing to the one person who is interested in a trade. Sell your eyepieces to the people who want them and buy the eyepieces from the people who want to sell them.

A similar principle obtains with regard to "complete systems." If you tell me I have to buy an AP900 to go along with your TOA150mm refractor, that forces me out of the game, I already have the mount I want. Better to break the stuff up and sell it to the people that want it.

It's not like people are sitting there drumming their fingers saying "I want to trade." If they want to trade they sell and buy somewhere else. Incidentally the "search" command on Astromart which many people use to flush out the "wanted" ads from the "for sale" ads will also flush out the "trade" ads.

So a lot of people won't even see your ad.

Part of the problem is that you are trying to trade for eyepieces that are old enough they have become rare.

The original 11 nagler was only made for a short time, there probably aren't a lot out there. The few that are may be kept for sentimental or collector value as much as performance.

The 32 widefield hasn't been made in a long time, again there probably aren't a lot of them out there. It's possible that nobody has seen the offer who has one.

The 55 plossl is a different beast completely. It's generally used by SCT or long-focus refractor owners, who want the low power. The lowest power T4 nagler is a 22, which may be too much power for those scopes on most nights. The people who want T4's are generally fast dob owners, who are unlikely to have a 55 plossl sitting around in their collection.
