Hey there!
I need some help since I`m new to the world of telesopes, but not certainly new to astronomy.
I looking for a good scope, mainly for DSO, but looking at planets it never bothers! wink
Anyway, I have my mind set on the LX90, though the price its pretty steep. So, would it be better to buy an OTA, a MOUNT, and whatever stuff is needed, rather than a whole setup in a package?

Say an 8" SCT a good mount for some light photos, eyepieces, and some other stuff! What would you recommend?

THanks a lot
Budget is 1400 including everything!

Hi there Emanuele, I'm sure you'll get plenty of ideas to come but you might wanna specify more; how are your skies, do they suffer from light pollution, will you travel to good skies if needed, do you want a compact, transportable scope, a visual, photographic or photo-visual combo or simply the biggest best optics for the bucks,..? Will it be your first scope, if not, what have you used so far, what are your expectations,...anyway, 1400 IMO is a nice budget, you could buy some decent equipment for that money. An SCT is a good all-purpose telescope being compact, versatile and visual-photographic. However if DSO is first on your list you might want to consider a shorter focal length telescope; most SCT are f10, requiring long exposure and thus a good and expensive mount. You could use a focal reducer though. I would go for an OTA with good optics of medium size (8-10")with a german equatorial mount, a good book on astrophotography,...How about an Atlas mount (which you can upgrade later) with an 8" OTA? Of course I am not saying the LX90 would be a bad choice but I would prefer something more 'adjustable'.
Good luck and feel free to ask!

Well, DSOs, planetary, and astrophotography in one scope is a big shoe to fill. :^)
The SCT is a good "Jack of all trades and master at none" type scope. It does everything you mentioned fairly well.
DSOs require aperture for a really good look.
Planetary requires contrast and high magnification for good viewing.
Astrophotography requires a stable platform with good tracking and decent light gathering.
Maybe a Mak Cassegrain would be good for what you want.
Any good 8" SCT will do fairly well, I have a NS8GPS that does very well for an 8" scope. You can find 8" SCTs without GPS for a good price here used.
I would suggest that you try to go to a few star parties in your area and get a chance to try things before buying.
Large aperture DOBs are the best DSO viewing for the money.
You can get 8-10" DOBs for little money now days new or used, but they are not for photography. But they can do well for planetary.
