Regreasing the Giro mount

If you find your Giro less smooth than before, there's a good chance that the grease inside was dried up. The Giro was so well designed that it would work like this even if you leave it alone without fixing, but for those who want perfect performance, please read on.

Regreasing the arms

The main components
To disassemble the mount arm, simply remove the two screws on the first arm, and then you can slide the arm easily. Then, you can take the whole arm out. You may choose the clean the old grease, or simply apply new grease there. Put it back, fix the screws again, done.

To disassemble the mount base is much harder. I went through a lot of adventure to find out a way. Actually, it was an internet friend who told me. So, I would like to share it here with you all.

Failure way

Before I tell the method which really works, please allow me to describe a failure way. There is a plastic plug inside the azimuth friction control. It also holds the mount base together, so we have to take it out in order to disassemble the mount base. I force a screw into the plug, and then try to pull it out with the screw. But it failed badly, the plastic plug is damaged somehow and the plug stuck deep inside without moving a bit, the screw comes out itself carrying some of the pieces of the plastic plug.

After then, I received an email from someone who teaches me how to fully disassemble the Giro, what good news. And the method is so easy. Let me share it here so that more Giro owners will benefit. Again, DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. No guarantee and it will void your warranty.

You need a screw driver, nothing else

First, remove the screw which controls the azimuth friction completely. Heat your screw driver head to very hot, nearly red. And then slowly insert it to the hole which originally holds the azimuth friction control screw. Once you seems to hit a soft surface (the plastic plug), continue to put it in with a little bit force until you hit a hard surface (the mount body). And carefully pull it out perpendicularly.

By the above step, you have created a slot in the plastic plug holding the head together.

Cool your screw driver

Then, re-insert your cooled screw driver to the slot you have just created through the friction control screw hole. You can now screw out the plastic plug by turning your screw driver slowly.

After the plug is taken out, you can pull softly on the mount arms and the head will come out.

Easy, right? After re-greasing, you can simply put the mount together again, and then put the plug back by using the same screw driver, and the friction control knob can be screwed back in again.

It will work like day one all over again, the friction control will still work as nicely as before. Of course, no guarantee here, but I can tell you it worked for me. The little slot created by the red hot screw driver will not hurt its function.
