Our goals are to bring people together having a common interest in astronomy, promote public education, observe the night sky, advance knowledge by assisting amateur astronomers to contribute to scientific observation, and share knowledge of astronomy related topics among all RAC members. The RAC also seeks to promote the education of its members, as well as the general public, on astronomy, the need for dark skies, and light pollution issues as they affect our environment.

We're a California 501(c)(3)non-profit corporation, and an amateur hobby club founded in 1960. We meet the first Friday of most months in the planetarium at the College of San Mateo Science Center (bldg. 36), in San Mateo, CA. All of our events are free, and open to the public. We normally have 3 star parties a month on Saturday evenings; two at Crestview Park in San Carlos, CA. On 1st quarter Moon weekends, we join the College in presenting 'Jazz Under the Stars' at the 4th floor observatory. It's stargazing set to the background jazz music of KCSM, 91.1 FM. The club is currently helping sponsor a CSM student on a research project in the Canadian Arctic. It will eventually lead to the setup of the S.M.A.R.T., the San Mateo Arctic Research Telescope., to conduct remote observations during the long Arctic night.
