NGC4631 Whale Galaxy Despite a peaceful appearance, the Whale Galaxy contains an area of exploding supernovae that spew gas to its outer edges. The galaxy is 120,000 lightyears across and is 25 million lightyears from Earth. The "spout" of the whale is companion galaxy NGC4627. Straight above the spout at the very top is 2MASX J12420645+3245390, a dim galaxy not listed in any common catalog. North is at the top.
