NGC891 is an edge-on spiral galaxy 30 million light-years distant in the constellation Andromeda. NGC891 belongs to the NGC1023 group of galaxies. If you zoom in on this compressed image you can see many of these galaxies throughout the entire image with a larger concentration in the lower right area. Some of these tiny galaxy smudges are close to one billion light-years away! You can also see filamentary patterns of interstellar dust which extend away from the belt of the galaxy. It is believed that supernova explosions within NGC891 caused this material to be thrown into the galaxy halo.
