Messier 33 is a face on spiral galaxy at a distance of three million light-years in the constellation Triangulum (Yes you guessed it… Triangulum is Latin for “triangle”). The ability to resolve the brightest stars within M33 gives the galaxy a grainy look. Being able to resolve stars three million light years away is pretty impressive with any setup, amateur or professional. You can also see several areas of hydrogen alpha which are probably very similar to the Milky Way’s “Lagoon Nebula”. If you look towards the bottom of the image at the 7 o’clock position you can see the tiny edge on galaxy PGC 3089041. A ball park guess based on its size would most likely put that galaxy about 500 million light-years away from Earth! http://owlmountainobservatory.com/
