I've had my 2012 Leaf 3 years and 33,000 miles now and am extremely disappointed to the point that I traded it in for a Toyota Prius C Hybrid. Simply put... It's no longer usable in a metro environment such as Huntsville, Alabama! When I purchased the Leaf new back in 2012 I bought it on a leap of faith since no warranties or battery replacement prices were available. While the technology is cool and I wanted to offer my support for it, I have to come to the conclusion that as of today Lithium Battery technology IS NOT ready for prime time. The image below shows the capacity right after disconnecting from a full charge. The temperature was 49 F. I reset the trip odometer a few days ago and drove to the local Nissan dealership to have the battery checked out. I started that day with the temperature in the high 40's and a range of 50 miles. After driving 18 miles to the dealership I had a remaining range of 17 miles at an average speed of ~30 mph. When I was greeted by the Nissan service rep I explained that there had to be something wrong with the batteries since the missing capacity notch indicated I had ONLY lost 15% of the new capacity. However it is painfully obvious that the current capacity is much lower than 85% of new. When new I would have gotten a range of ~75 miles at these temps. Now for the big surprise... The batteries where checked and found to be in good working condition. I was also commended for having taken excellent care of the battery. Here's the written description of the battery test from the service invoice: "Tested System - 1 bar below max capacity. Full systems test show 5 star rating in all categories - Checked for codes - All checks OK." The service rep was nice enough to give me the battery test and a car wash for free. He told me that they normally charge for the battery test after the second year. So let's do a summary: Clean resell value after 32,000 miles and 3 years is $13,500 if your lucky. That's a retail resell value loss of 66% after ONLY 3 years use and 32,000 miles. The replacement cost has now been set at $5,500 with a core exchange plus ~$1000 installation costs. TOTAL $6,500! I saved around $2,000 in energy costs ($3/gallon) over the 32,000 miles. Not very appealing from a financial or environment friendly standpoint when you consider that a considerable amount of energy/material and "eco-unfriendly" waste was created in the manufacture of the battery. The industrial 30 minute chargers that were touted to be at every McDonald's/Cracker Barrel by the end of 2012 NEVER materialized. This was good as a marketing gimmick, but nothing more. Driving over 50 mph will such the capacity/range out of a Leaf faster than a broken fire hydrant! Ditto for low temperature operation. So in summary.... I'll never consider the purchase of another all electric vehicle UNLESS there is a dramatic leap in battery technology which would increase energy density/range and longevity! I wish Nissan the best of luck. The Nissan Leaf is going to need it! Fred Herrmann
