Description

The setting sun. 5 frames over a 5-minute period. Top of each image is zero order from grating. Bottom is the dispersed spectrum from the blazed grating. Fraunhofer and Telluric bands visible in the spectra. From the bottom up, the most noticeable lines are A (O2) line at 759nm, then atmospheric water vapor around 725nm (broad set of lines), then B (O2) line at 686nm, then C (H-alpha) line at 656nm, then D (Na) lines at 589-590nm, etc. Notable in the sequence is the transition from full disk to setting disk, in which the blue wavelengths scatter first, then the green, and finally yellow, leaving the red sunset. Exposure times increased from 1/4000 second in the first frame, down to 1/400 second in the last 2 frames, all at 100 iso with Canon Digital Rebel, IR cut filter removed.
