This is a slightly complicated self portrait created on top of Paulina Peak in south central Oregon. I, my wife Cynthia, and my brother in law John went to the top of Paulina Peak last week for some star photos and started experimenting around. I could shoot the stars and get the silhouette of the ridge line, but it was too subtle to really pop the photo. I had a small LED key chain light (ASA guide no. appx 0.05) with me, and I thought, "I could light someone on the ridge while the star exposure's going". So, I had my wife stand at the camera with the remote shutter release, my brother in law John and I climbed up the ridge and selected what looked like a good spot. I had John crouch down where I needed him to light the shot. I then told my wife to open the shutter and count out loud to 25, our experimental exposure which brought up the stars. During the countdown, John lit the LED light on me for about a second and a half. My wife finished the count and released the shutter closed. This photo is the result. We repeated the process with John and got a great shot of him, too. Good times. So, for the credits: Director - Jim Allen, Lighting Specialist - John Ladu, Camera Operator - Cynthia Fay-Allen, Camera - Canon 5D MKII with a 21mm F/2.8 Zeiss Distagon lens pre-focused at infinity.
