A high-power view of the Aristarchus plateau and immediate area with its wide spectrum of features and colors visible at high magnification including the elevated plateau which provides a surreal three-dimensional experience. Note the coloration (mustard-yellow, bluish tint as well the brownish/muddy red) reported by Apollo mission astronauts and various ground-based obervers. The crater Aristarchus is the brightest feature on the moon (!) and is accompanied by crater Herodotus to the west as well as Vallis Schroeteri to the north. The Aristarchus Plateau north of Vallis Schroeteri is elevated by 2 km (see photo) and provides a surreal three-dimensional view when caught at the proper time during its lunation. This area of the moon is an astrophotographers nightmare to image with good detail and colouration.
