Star test and focus on FSQ?

I just bought a FSQ and when I took it out and star tested it the images inside and outside of focus were very different. TNR said that this is normal due to it being an astrograph and its correction for a flat field but didn't really elaborate on what I should be seeing. Does this really matter or should I just concern myself with the in focus results. This is my first refractor having always been a Maknewt fan.

Also I have the xtender Q and tried to use a 1.25" diagonal and couldn't reach focus on the sun even with the scope racked all the way in. Will I have this problem using the adapter Q for 2" diagonals as well?
Of course its been cloudy since the day after it arrived and I haven't had a chance to do a more thorough test..

I can't believe no one as answered you. Over on the refractor forum they are in a big discussion on collimation. Try putting your question over there. I don't own a Tak scope, but from what I hear they are supose to be spot on. I have a NP101 which is a 4 element design like yours and it collimates like they say. I have heard people just rave about the 106. Doesn't sound right to me.

Mitch,

As with you, my first refracter was the FSQ, I had it for three years and had all the exact same concerns. The star test is not the same on each side of focus, there not meant to be for the reasons TNR gave you. The infocus images are what matter and they are incredible. I used the Ext Q and the tak 1 1/4" diagonal and really had no problems reaching focus, I use a 90mm Coronado H-Alpha filter and it works great. I eventually went to the Tak 10th wave diagonal setup and never had any focusing problems. Focusing w/o the Ext Q can be a challenge however. I have never used a Bino with the FSQ. Don't get frustrated you have purchased a wonderful instrument and TNR will give you excellent backup. I have moved on to the M250 and that's another story for another day.
