8" StarHopper help

I just purchased a 8" starhopper for the family from an individual at a local astro club. (I apologize now for being a newbie and not knowing the correct terminology).

I need to correct the mount due to the fact that the telescope tube pivots too easily on the mount. The scope action is so smooth that I can line up a target in the telrad and as soon as I let go of the tube it begins to move up to the completely verticle position. (Not very good for observing ) The manual does not touch on this subject at all. I though it was a balance issue but if you swivel the scope tube to horizontal it holds its position level but once you start to move the tube vertically it swings up to the fully verticle position very easily (and on its own)

Anyone have this problem with the Celestron 8" StarHopper and if so how did you correct it. I know my young son who is getting this as a Christmas gift will get frustrated very easily is I cannot correct the movement.

It sounds like a balance problem. The more vertical you go at a certain point the weight of the telrad will pull the scope back. If you have the new version starhopper i am not very familier with it but you can probably tighten the altitude clutch on both bearings. The old starhopppers had a sliding dovetail which moved the balance back and forth. On my home built dob i use a rigel quick finder because it weighs almost nothing and it don't make my scope get off balance at near vertical position. You also can take some sand paper and slightly sand on the altitude bearings to ruff them up. Thats what i did with the rigel finder. smile Hope this helps.
