I will add my own endorsement for D&G. I've viewed through several 5- and 6-inchers since '93, and all were *very* fine, well-figured and -polished objectives.
I'd have absolutely no qualms directing my efforts towards AP/TMB or Royce, either. I expect their quality and performance to be comparably superb.
Mounting is *definitely* an important consideration. Most of the D&Gs I tried utilized alt-az mounts similar to this one (attached .jpg -- courtesy Dale Keller).
Best wishes.

Crazy Eyepiece PricesPosted By Dan D DuBal |
You think smaller lens elements are *easier?*
Super-simple mechanicals?
And maybe all glass types and supplies are the same?
Well, there's three huge reasons why you don't get it.
Rant away, Mr. Conville.

Can one believe this?Posted By Dan D DuBal |
I understand the reasoning, and I believe the story, of course. However, I would sooner bet on my winning the Powerball lottery than my seeing such "space ads" ever realized.
There are thousands of patents which have never been realised for one reason or another -- whether due to logistic, socio-political, or technological impracticalities (or others).
Best wishes.

2" 32mm EP: Optiluxe vs KonigPosted By Dan D DuBal |
While I have no confirmation, I suspect and would guess that these two eyepieces are indeed equivalent (i.e. the same "animal," though from different brands).
Let's hope someone will relay their first-hand experience(s).
Best wishes.

why not a "premium" SCTPosted By Dan D DuBal |
The market is plenty strong-enough as it is, so the question becomes one of *margin* -- not simply revenue. Based on the evidence we have (i.e. no such premium scopes from Meade or Celestron), I'm left with the assumption that neither company cares to push the fidelity envelope. The margins are far greater within the other realms (electronics, features, etc. which facilitate *use*).
Their production volumes would also nose-dive, further hampering margins and profits.
Best wishes.

17mm Televue Plossl?Posted By Dan D DuBal |
The *original* Tele Vue Plossl line included the following focal lengths: 7.4mm 10.5mm 13mm 17mm 21mm 26mm 32mm 40mm 55mm
The line was revised/redesigned in early '96, and the shorter focal lengths were shifted a little: 8mm 11mm 15mm 20mm 25mm (plus the 32mm 40mm and 55mm). This revision, I believe, coincides with a change in the Plossls' subcontracted manufacture. The optical design/layout of the Tele Vue Plossl remained unchanged.
Best wishes.

More advanced finderscopes out there?Posted By Dan D DuBal |
Lumicon.
University Optics.
Kasai (if you're willing to spend a lot).
Any short-tube f/5 achromat in the 60-80mm range.
Many folks feel the UO finder is the finest readily-available finder on the market.
Best wishes.
