Gavin Newsom In 2028?

People wrote him off until the SC primary. Multiple people held front-runner status before that.

What I'd agree with is that the entire anti-Trump movement was looking to consolidate around ANYONE that could beat him as quickly as possible. The truth is, Biden was a compromise candidate because he held the most conservative views of the candidates (all relative) and I believe the consensus was that would bring in more disaffected R's and independents, which was true.

And while we're on the subject of Biden....Biden not stepping aside in 2022 was the second most disappointing thing about his presidency to me. The first was that he did not keep his promise to the people that he would simply be a bridge to a new generation of Democrats. That does not just entail stepping aside when he should have.

It meant (at least to me) that he would not try and be a transformative "FDR"-like president and enact sweeping legislation of any kind during his term. If he had been simply a care-taker president holding the office mainly for the 2024 election, Donald Trump would likely not be the President-elect today.

Reaction.

I'm praying I won't, for the third time in a row, be compelled to vote for a Dem in the presidential race in '28.

Assuming Trump runs for a third term, I'm very conflicted about Newsome. He is the slickest politician I have ever heard. He can make any bad policy in CA sound like he tried to prevent it and is a centrist. He is extremely bright and gifted, and like Rod, I have never voted for him. It's really hard to say if he truly could distance himself from the worst impulses of the CA DNC, but you would be shocked how skilled he is at doing just that. He's almost like a Trump that somehow avoids the label of outright liar - even to me.

That’s adorable! 😊 Of course I meant Trump, not Vance. It will not be long before you hear the “They stole my first term” drumbeat and a move to renominate Trump.

or even better, a Vance/Trump ticket where Vance campaigns to be a figurehead for VP Trump. Gets around a legal battle:

Eligibility and requirements
Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the constitution states for a person to serve as vice president must:

be a natural-born citizen of the United States.
be at least thirty-five years old.
be a permanent resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.[16]

Trump will find a way to hold on to power, or at least try.

why would it be unconstitutional for Trump to run in the VP slot. You more than anyone should know that the law often boils down to form over substance.

Google reveals a scholarly article on this - author agrees it's possible.  Written before Trump was elected the first time.

This would be almost orgasmic for Trump - to literally have a self-proclaimed puppet as President, where he could humiliate him on a daily basis. Looking back, Putin did something similar when he had a sham prime minister in front of him.

Trump will love the idea.

None of this is going to happen of course.  Trump is going to retire in four years, announce himself the greatest president of all time, and spend his remaining years basking in the adoration of the aging MAGA crowd and fundraising for his monument.   The Lincoln Memorial has anchored the DC Mall opposite the Capital for over a hundred years.  Time for a bulldoze/upgrade don't' cha think?

I believe Trumps pitchfork army would terrorize Vance worse than the Mafia could if he didn’t toe the line and he would comply. We see the Senate pushing back right now against Trump’s cabinet, but I do not believe that is going to last long, and Trump will unleash the unwashed against his enemies in the GOP to keep them in line - enemy = non-compliant

Ask him if he either thinks, or cares one iota that perhaps anyone involved in the Jan 6th riot is innocent and whether or not he is the slightest bit curious about some of those people who were indicted by Biden's corrupt DOJ and who served time in their Jail, had excessive fines placed upon them, or that they were railroaded by the corrupt Biden gov't DOJ?

Did you want to answer that?   wink

Here, let me have a shot at not answering that.
