Hallelujah! Democrats are now focused on jobs!

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

Like a laser beam. And this time they really mean it. Jobs and the deficit.

Every democrat talking head is mocking the Healthcare Reform repeal effort as a waste of time, because the new-elected republicans are supposed to be focusing on jobs. Some genius thunk up a talking point!

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/04/outgoing-speaker-pelosi-says-house-democrats-will-focus-on-job-creation/

"House Democrats will keep our focus on the creation of jobs - putting the American people to work," Pelosi said.

Pelosi added, "We will measure every policy from both parties as it comes forth as to whether it creates jobs, whether it strengthens the middle class and whether it reduces the deficit instead of heaping mountains of debt onto our children and our grandchildren."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/03/AR2011010303781.html

"Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the outgoing speaker, said in a post on Twitter, "While Dems are focused on job creation, GOP is fast-tracking repealing patients' rights & Rx help for seniors."

So the democrats waste more than a year ignoring jobs during the healthcare cram-down, but NOW they are ready to roll up their sleeves and work on jobs? What democrat genius thunk up this talking point?

Peter King's Proposed Gun Legislation

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

In order to inconvenience the least number of citizens, Peter King's proposed gun legislation should be modified to forbid politicians from coming within 1000 feet of legal gun owners. smile

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/47428.html

"Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), one of the few pro-gun control Republicans in the House, wants to make it illegal for someone to knowingly carry a gun within 1,000 feet of certain high-ranking federal officials, including members of Congress."

Knife Control

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

Laws must be passed to prevent these senseless tragedies.

For instance, note that the perp was in possession of multiple knives. If people were restricted to only one knife, then the severity of this tragedy may have been mitigated.

There should be a 14 day cooling off period on the purchase of knives. That may avert some tragedies by allowing sufficient time for a person to get over his flatulence and avoid stabbing friends.

Another lesson from this disaster-- Knives don't kill people, Flatulence does!

Knives should never be sold to any person with a history of flatulence. In fact, predictive precautions should also be implemented. Prospective knife customers should be required to provide a doctor's statement that they are unlikely to have attacks of flatulence.

Prospective customers must fill out the required federal questionnaire, attesting under penalty of perjury that they never consume hazardous substances such as beans, cabbage, or beer.

Predictably the evil money-grubbing bean lobby is opposed to this common-sense knife regulation, but we should not coddle the greedy concerns of a few bean magnates at the cost of compromising public safety!

Police say a Connecticut man became so angered by a woman's reprimand for his continued flatulence at a party that he went on a stabbing spree, killing a personal friend.

According to published reports, Marc Higgins, 21, allegedly stabbed to death his friend, Matthew Walton, and injured three others during a house party where alcohol was being consumed Saturday night in Bristol, Conn.

A witness, Donal Phillips, said Higgins "got very drunk" at the home and was flatulent "throughout the evening." A female friend, Stacy Buccheri, reportedly got in an argument with Higgins over the flatulence and slapped his face.

According to the case report, Buccheri confirmed Higgins had been breaking wind and that "everyone was upset" about it. She said she slapped Higgins because he "singled her out and called her a tramp."

Phillips indicated that after being slapped, Higgins became upset, smashed a beer bottle and stormed out of the house.

He returned some 45 minutes later armed with more than one knife and began stabbing people indiscriminately on the back porch.

Herman Cain for President?

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

http://www.hermancain.com/

I am easily fooled. For about a year around 1998 I was foolish enough to think that John McCain would make a good president, but then learned enough about him to change my mind.

Perhaps the same could happen learning more about Herman Cain, but I've heard him sub for Neal Boortz on the radio and read some of his writing. At the moment I like the fellow.

He is quick enough of wit to easily debate the other repub candidates or Obama. Most of his political positions of which I'm aware, I like. Perhaps he is not smarmy enough to be a successful politician? Perhaps he would be viewed at too radical by too many voters?

The young man will either have an unfortunate end, or has a future of fame and fortune. Wonder if he is a future Geraldo Rivera in the making? Though I'd hope he would turn out a better-quality muck-raker and crap-starter than Rivera.

The man posing as Kasaam then joked that his friends call NPR, "National Palestinian Radio," because, according to him, NPR is the only media outlet that covers Palestinians' perspective. Schiller laughed.

When the ersatz Islamists declare they're "not too upset about maybe a little bit less Jew influence of money into NPR," Schiller responds by saying he doesn't find "Zionist or pro-Israel" ideas at NPR, "even among funders. I mean it's there in those who own newspapers, obviously, but no one owns NPR."

Liley chimes in at this point to add that, "even one of our biggest funders who you'll hear on air, The American Jewish World Service, may not agree with us. I visited with them recently and they may not agree with what we put on the air but they find us important to them and, sometimes it's not that easy to hear what we say and what our reporters say, but they still think NPR is important to support."

Schiller added that "they [the American Jewish World Service] are really looking for a fair point of view and many Jewish organizations are not."

Japan Shift and GPS

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

USGS is reporting that substantial parts of Japan have shifted 8 feet because of the earthquake and the earth's axis has tilted a few inches.

Eight feet (I believe) may be sufficient to foul up some of the more precision applications of GPS. It is within the public-available standard of error, but for instance don't surveyors use military-quality GPS along with a ground-based radio system?

It would certainly be confusing if one owned an old fence line and suddenly the fence is 8 feet into the neighbor's property.

Found some discussion here. There may be more authoritative discussion, but "GPS" and "Japan Shift" are in too many news web articles today to make it an easy search. (USGS used the word GPS in their announcement).

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=270163

The axis shift of the Earth is probably less significant, but wonder about the geometry of that. A slight axis shift might dislocate GPS measurements a fair distance near the equator? The axis would shift but the GPS satellite orbits would not shift?

The article above describes that there is slow tectonic drift and natural earth wobbles which account for several feet drift per decade just about everywhere. So an old GPS map might not be extremely accurate anyway. For precision use, seems that GPS maps would need relatively constant updating?

Escape Dog

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

Bandit the wonder hound is an expert excavation engineer. He can dig a hole to china in a matter of minutes. Bandit usually has a very short attention span except when trying to dig a small animal out of the ground or to get in trouble. Then he will stay on task for days at a time. Sometimes he will dig a hole to china just for the fun of it.

Bandit is sweet but rather expensive free dog. Routinely have to prove that man is smarter than dog. Had to put a latch on the kitchen garbage container to keep him out. A tall baby gate to keep him from climbing up on the pantry shelves and browsing for snacks. We finally trained him not to jump up on tables or kitchen counters, at least when we are lookiing.

We have about an acre of woods chain-link fenced for the dogs to play in (and I enjoy it too).

After we installed the fence, Bandit dug out within 10 minutes of the first time we let him back there. Had to lay 4 foot 14 gauge welded wire mesh around the entire bottom fence perimeter to keep the hound from digging out. Fold the wire into an L, 2 feet on each side. Weave the top wire into the fence, and then stake the bottom side laying on the ground. That worked because so far Bandit hasn't figured out how to start his escape tunnel 2 feet away from the fence and tunnel under both the chicken wire and the chain link fence. He could do that in a half hour tops, if he ever figures it out.

The wooded back lot straddles a ridge and a little valley goes thru the middle. When we get toad-strangler storms a few times per year, rain streams down that little valley from up the ridge, and washes leaves into a leaf dam against the chain link, making big lakes in the little valley which has enough water pressure to sometimes pop the fence wire off the posts on the uphill side, or bend the double-door vehicle gate on the downstream side.

So was trying to figure out how to make a few drainage holes big enough for water + leaves to pass thru, but small enough to prevent dogs passing thru. We had previously reinforced the two flood areas to prevent the leaf-dams from destroying the fence, but the last tornado storms got real close to dumping enough water to damage the reinforced sections. It is annoying to have to go out there and shovel leaves after every 'mini flood', but it is kinda difficult to keep woods free from sticks and leaves. smile

We recently got a small adjoining lot of woods on the uphill side. It is fenced but the old fencing is not long-term-Bandit-proof so he can't go out there for awhile yet. Leave the feller in the adjoining lot for more than about 10 minutes and he would be out roaming the neighborhood. He's not dangerous, but likely to chase a cat across a street and get hit by a car, or dig up a neighbor's flower bed, or whatever. And he is greyhound-fast and you don't catch the dog unless he wants to be caught.

So I tried cutting a first experimental leaf-drainage hole in the uphill fence. The hole is about 8" square, reinforced with fence pipe and conduit so it can't get any bigger than 8". Figured on making a few more if the first one worked.

Bandit saw me cutting the hole and supervised the work, because he is quite interested in holes. All the dogs are good helpers when there is work to be done. He studiously ignored the hole in the fence for two days after. Was kinda surprised he left it alone that long. Kept periodically checking to make sure he couldn't get out the hole.

Dad says rabbits and cats can go thru any hole that is big enough for the head to fit thru. Bandit is only about 55 pounds but I was pretty sure that his head is the only thing that would fit that drainage hole. Third day, the other hound was barking, "I'm gonna tell on you", so looked out the window and Bandit was halfway thru the hole. By the time I got out there he was all the way thru and quite pleased with himself exploring the new lot. Travis the other hound was still barking, "I tried to warn you. Now look what he's done!"

So I retrieved Bandit from the other lot before he dug out of the fence, but now have to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to make a drainage hole big enough for leaves but small enough to keep a dog in. Its amazing a dog could wiggle thru such a small hole. There is concrete on the bottom at that area so he can't dig the hole any deeper under the fence.

Temporarily set a concrete block endwise in the hole so Bandit couldn't go thru it till I work on it some more. But now that he knows the fence can be defeated, he sits back there for hours sticking his paw thru the chain link trying to dig out the dirt on the other side of the fence that isn't concrete-reinforced. He has made quite a good-sized hole digging with one paw thru the chain link. So I need to pour concrete on the other side of the fence at that area to discourage him practicing his new trick. He is banished from the back lot until this weekend so I can work on it some more.

Yet more collateral damage in the war on drugs

Posted By James C Chandler Jr

Here is an article about a young veteran killed in a no-knock war on drugs raid. Shot 60 times, though he never fired a shot at the police.

This buck has stopped at the desk of Tucson Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, the same hero who blamed the Giffords shooting on Right Wing Hate Speech.
