Comet ISON Oct. 15, 2013

Posted By Dave Erickson

I managed to image ISON every morning again this week.

I think the nicest is ISON Mars, dwarf galaxy Leo1 and Regulus. This is a combination of (15) 6 min exposures where a median combined ISON aligned image was composited with a median combined star aligned image. The non background uniformity to the right "south" is from Zodiacal light, I think it adds to the image so I left it in. The 4.5" F/4 astrograph and a Sloan yellow filter were used...

C/2012 S1 Comet ISON M95-M96 Oct 26, 2013

Posted By Dave Erickson

With the birth of my second grandchild and the weather not cooperating this week I only got a few nights of imaging in. Here is C/2012 S1 Comet ISON (1) 6min Exposure Sloan Yellow Filter 4.5" F/4 astrograph October 26, 2013. Also are M95 M96 at 9.8mag and 9.3 mag respectively. They are 41' 43" separation. The comet tail is about 20' in length. There are a lot of galaxies in the image down to about 17 mag...

No Imaging tonight 20131028

Looks like I'll miss another night of comet imaging. Clouds moved in 4:30am this morning after a couple images of comet Lovejoy and now there is snow at Sierra Chaparral Remote Observatory. Hope things clear for the New Moon... The "Deck Camera" and "AllSky Camera" images attached...

Linear, Encke, ISON, Lovejoy Oct 27, 2013

Posted By Dave Erickson

I know we don't get "real Weather" here in California so when it clouds over or snows its a real event. OK it stopped snowing but it won't be clear till tomorrow so here are some images from a few days ago for this weeks post...

Attached are four taken the morning of October 27 within hours of each other. Each is a single 6min Exposure using a Sloan Yellow Filter and the 4.5" F/4 astrograph. Image scale is preserved however the screen stretch is not so dimmer comets might appear brighter in comparison to brighter comets. Linear is 8th mag, Encke is 7.8mag, ISON is 8mag and Lovejoy is 10th mag in spite of the way they look...

I think its amazing there are (4) reasonably bright comets appearing so close to each other in our sky.

Four comets imaged November 8 2013.

Several of the comets are getting more difficult to image as they move easterly and approach the horizon where they are immersed in Zodiacal light and twilight.

I inserted a corresponding AllSky image in each comet image. Within each Allsky image is a small circle marking the rough location of the comet during the exposure. I also annotated each comet image with Sky quality readings. Interestingly there were high clouds making the sky slightly brighter during the Lovejoy image than the ISON image, this is evident in both the Allsky image and the SQM readings.

Image scale is preserved but the screen stretch is not.
