Did I see the dark plume heralding the SEB come-ba

Posted By Jeff Blazey

I tell you what, I was observing Jupiter with my 7" mak-Newt this evening, being blessed with very steady and clear skies for the last couple of nights, and I was seeing a lot of activity in the SEB area at ~7:00 to 8:00 Eastern time USA. Looked like several long filaments and the band was less muted.

Maybe something IS going on.

Spanish Woman Claims Ownership of Sun

I would agree with her claim to ownership only if she landed on it first.

I'd like them to start digging into the UFO files.

That could be interesting and entertaining.

King Kong has Arrived

Posted By Jeff Blazey

What a beast the Kong is. Despite the sore back, bruised knuckles and minor cuts & blood during the process, I got the bad boy installed.

Electronics check out fine but, as is the usual state of astro-life this winter, I'm waiting on the weather to dial the set up in.

8" objective dissasembly

Like Pat says it's not terribly difficult, you just need to be careful handling the elements and mark them properly before seperating them.

Is the lens coated? Also, has the water etched the glass at all?

I too am curious why D&G is silent as they do cleanings and other service all the time.

80mm preference

For visual or AP?

At 80 MM a well made F7.0 doublet with ED glass would be fine IMO.

TOA 130 Collimation

Ouch! That sucks. If it's coma you're seeing now, elements may have gotten de-centered or wedged.

I wonder how well it works...

Well, I copied this from the article

"The Sukhoi T-50 was completely designed and manufactured by Russian scientists"

Enough said.

Achro, Semiapo, ED, Fluorite, etc.

Posted By Jeff Blazey

Thanks. This really shows that it IS the mating element, not the ED element that determine the color "error" for a doublet.

For example combining FPL53 and KF6 shows no real advantage over the FPL51/FK6 combo as the slopes of those two lines are almost identical. So I'd go for the cheaper glass for a given quality.

The PSK5/N-KzFSN11 combo is really interesting. Any practical problems with either glass?

Thanks again

Jeff
