Government Medical 'Insurance'

Posted By Lee Spain

I think the idea that 'government solutions' only create problems is patently false. There are problems with programs that need to be fixed, need to be more flexible, or need to be phased out. However, most of the problems that government attempts to address were already there. When government works for them, people don't complain. When government works for someone else, they whine and moan like nobodies business.

Throughout my career I've worked in business, government-contracting, and government. I've seen plenty of waste and stupidity in private sector organizations. I've also seen and experienced private sector decisions that have greatly harmed the country and individual people. The only difference is that business is a little more flexible than government because it takes time to repeal or change laws.

Really? Really?? Vomit

That's insane! Seriously, if you really want to be green, put up SAILS! They've worked just fine for a long, long, time! They have stealthy masts now and on a tri-maran, they'd be plenty fast.

As much as I like spending money to blow up foreigners, some of the recent Navy projects are a little over the top. A billion dollar tin-can is a little much!

Plus, if we don't strike the right balance of hi-lo mix in our defense spending, other countries can overwhelm us with sheer numbers.

Every religion has its zealots

The Fourth Quarter Christian Church of Gainesville has no zealots. If the Gators happen to be on and it's the fourth quarter and they are losing, then we might pray. Otherwise, all non-essential prayer is banned so that essential prayers can get through. Essential prayers are ones that start with "Jesus Christ!!!!" and stomping on the brakes. Countless traffic tragedies could be avoided if the lord heard those prayers instead of all the ones that go "God is great. God is good. Let us thank him for our food." grin

Penn State Report

Posted By Lee Spain

I disagree about punishing current Penn State players and coaches for things that were done in the past by people who were in PSU management positions. However, in some states, if you fail to report child abuse, you can face real jail time. Sandusky had lots of accessories to his crimes. People who looked the other way and who failed to make sure that crimes and suspicions were reported to authorities. These people should be criminally prosecuted. In addition, since Penn State failed as an institution to protect these kids they are legally liable for damages. Since those who were damaged by Sandusky are still alive. They should sue the heck out of Penn State and those administrators and coaches who looked the other way.

Here in Georgia it seems like Mark Richt kicks a Bulldog player off the team every week or two for misconduct. He's not that great of a football coach. But, it seems like he does take care of team discipline issues. If I was a commissioner of college football, I would take a two pronged approach:

1. Coaches, Administrators, & Staff. They need training in ethics, morality, law, and what is expected of them as managers/employees of their institutions. Zero tolerance policies should be explained and enforced. If coaches are to lead teams and act en loco parentis for the young men, they need to be morally fit.

2. Players. They need training in ethics, morality, law, and what is expected of them as representatives of their institutions. Athletes should also get training to help them avoid becoming the next Michael Vick or "athlete caught with drugs."

Thoughts On War And The Military

Posted By Lee Spain

Thanks for the thought-provoking read. I think every family has a veteran who came back from war a dramatically changed person. There is undoubtedly much truth in that article.

I feel for the author as he seems to have been through the perils of a war, a liberal arts education, and some sort of racial consciousness raising (either OMG - I'm black...or...OMG - I'm white and should feel guilty). That'll twist anybody around.

That being said. We do have real enemies and real threats to cope with in the world and that is no lie. The view from the trenches sucks. But, the threat was and is plenty real. Real from Al Queda, Real from Saddam, and Real from Iran.

Iran admins our 2nd amendment another "good" idea

Posted By Lee Spain

I expect the Obama administration will let this play out to the point where the rest of the world thinks of the US as a bunch of violent psychopaths and demands we relinquish our guns. The administration will NOT comply with UN demands, but will use it to underpin some second term push for gun control.

Why you don't want criminals to be the only gun...

Doesn't that feller know that you can't shoot fleeing felons anymore? You're supposed to chase them down, rassle with them, and take 'em by their ears back to their mothers. When will people learn than armed robberies are just mistakes young people make on their journey to adulthood. wink

ONE MOMENT of Silence:Rejected

Posted By Lee Spain

1972 was a long, long, long, long, long, time ago. As awful at the Munich attacks were, at some point, commemorations become political acts to keep people riled up about things that happened in the past. Plus, it's kind of a waste of time. I'm pretty sure most people can do that math: Palestinian + Islamic = Murderers.

Bad News for Penn State fans --
* $60 million fine
* restricted to 15 scholarships
* players can transfer to another school without waiting a year to play

Good News for Penn State fans --
* The SEC Commissioners won't be afraid to extend them an invitation into the conference.
