So my conclusion is that Trump is blowing smoke about mass deportations, and also that the press that breathlessly reports these stories is blowing smoke too, knowing full well from their contacts inside the government that there is no true desire and no effective means to implement mass deportations. Makes for a good campaign promise and a good opposition story though!
I would not be surprised to see an effort to deport those who engage in criminal activity beyond sneaking in. Also the rate of illegal immigration can be curbed a ton without impacting the economy.
Do you agree, or am I missing something? Seriously.
While I'd like to think your assessment is correct, here's what is missing:
1. Tom Holman, Trump's "border czar": "Homan, Trump’s former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is expected to carry out what the president-elect has described as “the largest mass deportation operation in American history,” which his allies expect to expand to target potentially millions of people beyond the scope of undocumented immigrants who are accused of committing crimes."

2. "Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced the state will continue to offer up more land to them for mass deportation facilities, stating that her office is identifying property to be ready for when the new administration takes office in January." “We have 13 million acres around the state, and if there’s something that meets the federal government’s needs, we want them to be able to utilize that..." "...the General Land Office was "fully prepared" to enter an agreement with the federal government to allow a facility to be built there for the "processing, detention, and coordination of the largest deportation of violent criminals in the nation's history."
