Son of Hibiscus

Posted By Paul Gustafson

This lacks the rich color and great bug of Robert's hibiscus, but the structure in these flowers is interesting.

The active ingredient is allethrin, which is a synthetic pesticide, not a repellent. Don't eat it:

The MSDS for allethrin includes the following:

"Potential Health Effects:

Eye: May cause eye irritation.

Skin: May cause skin irritation. May cause allergic sensitization in certain individuals. Allethrin may cause a skin allergy. If allergy develops, very low future exposure can cause itching and a skin rash.

Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation of the digestive tract. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.

Inhalation: Harmful if inhaled. May cause respiratory tract irritation. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated. May cause an allergic response. High exposure may cause dizziness, shaking, irritability, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Allethrin may cause an asthma-like allergy. Future exposure can cause asthma attacks with shortness of breath, wheezing, cough, and/or chest tightness.

Chronic: May cause liver and kidney damage."

First shots with MPE-65mm macro lens

Posted By Paul Gustafson

I've had this lens for several months, finally tried it yesterday and was promptly rained out. I can see that focus is going to be much more picky -- I was hand-holding and this little caterpillar about 1" long with the "don't touch me" irritating hairs was really moving:

CNC Supply True-2

Posted By Paul Gustafson

I just purchased this accessory:

http://www.cncsupplyinc.com/

While the inside of the tube is fully threaded it is still highly reflective. It needs to be shot with flat black paint. Any suggestions for brand/color? Krylon makes an "Ultra flat black" but I'm wondering if there is something better... TIA.

Bug ID?

Posted By Paul Gustafson

While recuperating from surgery I came across this guy on my back deck. It's about an inch long, has six legs, uses the tail end like an inchworm, extends the head in and out of the sheath on the neck, is constantly in motion "wagging" its head back and forth. It was very difficult to get a sharp picture of the little guy since he was so active, but here are a few mediocre shots. Anyone have any idea what it is?
