importance of the primary mirror being centeredPosted By Rex Cox |
A friend who owns a 15" Discovery dob has a primary mirror that is mounted in the tube somewhat off center. I haven't looked at it, so I don't know how much off center it is.
How important of a matter is this? I realize that if it is grossly off center, then it is an issue. But, how close does it have to be? Doesn't collimation account for such things? It has always been my understanding that the tube on a Newt is a mechanism for holding the optical train in place, and not so much as a mechanism for centering the optical train, and that collimation, secondary placement, proper focuser shimming, and such takes care of the rest.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll be educated here.
