Orion Mak vs. Stellarvue refractor

Posted By David Simper

Josh,

having experience with Apex 127, SV 102EDT and MK-67, I would say think SV4" EDT or Vixen102ED vs MK-67. Both MK-67 and EDT are airline portable, I am not sure about 102D and Vixen is too long.
It really depends on your viewing preferences - the narrow field Maks more for planetary, doubles, the 4" semi-apos more universal.

Airline portable design questions: 11"

Posted By David Simper

William,

you mentioned the StarMaster 11 ELT. There was some discussion lately on SM group that some time ago, Rick considered to produce airline portable 11" Starmaster but put the idea aside due to lack of interest. Several people in the discussion revealed interest in such scope. Maybe Rick needs a public "push" to move in this direction.

To answer your question re: low profile mirror cell, have alook here;

You may try also a flossing line to get underneath the mirror.

Some MV Filter Question (MV+color?)

Posted By David Simper

Vlad,

get the Celestron Contrast Booster filter (the same product as Baader Contrast Booster). It is affordabe $39-43 and will serve your scope well - AR-6 has a significant color error - the blue chanel is just a mush. Get a second 2"->1.25" adapter and keep the filter on it for higher power views (supposedly with 1.25" eyepieces), where the color error would be most annoying.

NPC1problems, not very happy!

Posted By David Simper

Jim,

I feel sory for your disappointment but there is a silver lining to it:
there is a 2" version of your Celestron filter. Baader makes them for Celestron and you can order them for $79 from the US dealer:
http://www.alpineastro.com/filters/filters.htm
Note in the description:
"While some dielectric filters may degrade just from exposure to moisture or occasional cleaning, Baader filters withstand repeated real-world exposure to the elements and physical cleaning."
The Baader is more agressive in suppresion of the violet than NPC1 which theoretically makes color shift to yellow but people differed in reports how much this bothered them.

I am sure Neil would adapt the 6" for longer f.l.
