Ice found in the Arctic

And here is the news from down under.

That makes 2 poles with no reduction in seasonal ice.

Laser pointer

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

I probably should not be opening my big mouth but, I use a Howie Glatter green laser in an Orion bracket. I have heard that you should use one that is pulsed (as is my Howie Glatter one) so it does not overheat when left on, and the batteries last longer too.

Incidentally, the Orion bracket is really cool. It has the spring-loaded X-Y adjustment, as well as a collar with a set screw to keep the beam on.

Using it on my Astroscan is WAY cool.

Beam on,
Hugh

Interesting Blogs on Climate Change

Thanks, Doug! I've been thinking of doing something similar ever since someone lamented there not being a permanent reference source for Newbies to the forum, but I could not have done it better.

IYOA is also Global Recession

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

If there are any astronomy clubs in your area, I'd bet they would be willing to put on a public star party for the students and their parents on school grounds for no charge. Spring is ususally when schools sponsor science fairs, and perhaps you could do a star party in conjunction with the night the parents are coming to see the kids' science projects.

Note to Obama: The Science is Not Settled

Interesting to see a few names from the IPCC on the list. It must not be the monolithic group I thought it was.

More influences

I'm having trouble understanding how the moon influences climate. I read the whole piece, but did not see a logical connection, only a statistical one. What is the thinking there?

White Roofs

What we need is a roofing material with a pigmentation that can be controlled by a thermostat.

The stratosphere has been cooling for 30 years!

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

Not to "cherry-pick" the data too much, but the graph shows no cooling of the stratosphere over the last 15 years. Similarly, lower level heating is practically level over the same period. Isn't this when most of the "hockey-stick" increase in CO2 has been taking place?

ENSO influence on temperature variations

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

I would not count on El Nino just yet ...

Here is a corroborative report that suggests the current flat trend in global temperatures will remain flat for another decade until 2020:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7376301.stm

I've also noticed strong correlation between global temperature with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), which suggests no temperature increase likely over the next two decades before entering a warming phase around 2030.

In either case, one thing's for certain if temperatures fail to rise in the next 10 years: the AGW debate will get hotter!
