Canon Image Stabilized Binoculars

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

I just got the 12x36 IS for Christmas, and am quite pleased. Cost and weight were key factors for me. I already have 15x70's and a parallelogram mount, so the 15x50's seemed duplicative of those. I wanted something for quick looks with greater resolving power than my 8.5 x 44's, and the 12x36's filled the bill nicely.

OTOH, my personal opinion is that 15x is where many celestial objects start taking on individual personalities, rather than just being dim fuzzies, so it is a tough call. However, the IS bins work great in daytime also, and the extra weight of the 15x15's could get old fast on a nature hike.

In summary, I'd say it depends on the other binoculars you have and how you intend to use them.

Classifying planetary nebulae by visual appearance

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

I like your visual classification scheme, Inge. I think it would make a nice article in an astronomy magazine, with a photographic examples of each category. The trick would be getting the images to match the eyepiece impression, which is what you have done so well.

Why is the sky dark at night?

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

The night sky would be as bright as day if the universe had an infinite age. Since the universe has only been in existence for 13.7 billion years, light from some parts of the universe has not had time to reach us yet.

Easy to use Star Maps for Beginners

What's wrong with a planisphere? Then you get the right part of the sky no matter what time of night you are observing, and it covers the whole year all in one chart.

SkyView EQ Deluxe

I had one of those for several years, and always thought it was a pretty decent mount. However, I found using manual setting circles to be a rather inefficient way of locating objects, and quickly resorted to star-hopping with a decent chart and a RACI finder scope.

My experience with clock drives on that mount was that the Accu-Track adjustable-rate version was unsatisfactory. The tracking rate was always off. Once I switched to the RA/Dec control box, the problem disappeared and it tracked real well for visual use.

I have not done any astrophotography, but from what I've read, the SVD is not up to the task. For that matter, it will be borderline for visual use with the 8" Newt you are putting on it. I tried to save money by using it for my 16 pound MN66, and it was too shaky when trying to manually focus, so I switched to a Losmandy GM-8. I think the Losmandy is about the minimum mount that is capable of serious astrophotography.

Hope that helps,

First Full Color Astronerds!

They are great! Keep them coming - my wife really identified with the one about the solar eclipse trip, which is exactly how I accidentally planned our trip to China next year.

Why is everyone selling their orion/skywatcher 120ED

Posted By Hugh Bartlett

Check out the review in Astromart's review section. The Eon 120ED is probably similar to the Skywatcher. The reviewer's scope is now available on Orion's Clearance Center for $1,600. I think I'd sooner try their Vixen 140mm Neo-Achromat for that price, or maybe go with the longer focal length Orion 120mm Achromat, which the reviewer preferred.

Really an excellent expose on how this misconception got steamrolled into a political movement. Frontline should replay this for the PBS audience, and all who still have open minds. Thanks for sharing!

It's great! For the IYA, a color version would be well worth it.
