Re: wait for Discovery scopes

Posted By Carl Stanley

I bought a 12.5" PDHQ Dob a year ago, it took 4 months from order until delivery. about 1 month longer than originally quoted. The extra month was worth the wait however, it is a very nice telescope-well built.

Discovery 15" PDHQ Info

Posted By Carl Stanley

The 15" PDHQ is an excellent scope, the 2" focuser is made by JMI and is really smooth, the optics are really good. The down sides are the weight of the tube (about 100 lbs), and the eyepieces supplied with the scope are not the best in the world. Also the mirror mount is not the strongest, I had to use silcone glue on the back and sides of my mirror in order to insure it wouldn't fall out of the mount when the telescope is near horizontal (I learned the hard way and I now have a minor scratch on my mirror)

Re: Meade dobs

Posted By Carl Stanley

Instead of spending extra time and money to make a Meade dob more usable, just spend the extra money up-front and buy a Discovery PDHQ dob that dosn't need any upgrading.

Star chart recommendations please

Posted By Carl Stanley

I've been using the Uranometria 2000.0 with my 12.5" Dob in finding the Herschel 400. It's worked out pretty good so far!

Orion Mak vs. Stellarvue refractor

Posted By Carl Stanley

I recently purchaced the Orion SkyView Pro 127. This being the 8th telescope I've owned I can say that the SkyView Pro mount has the best tracking I've ever seen in a drive. The optics are very good also.

Eyepiece quality question

Posted By Carl Stanley

I've owned a 26mm SP eyepiece made in Japan and one that was made in Taiwan, I could see no difference in quality between the two eyepieces.

good 8x50 finder ?

Posted By Carl Stanley

I've owned all three brands before, and I like the Orion best because you can align it much easier than the other two.

ETX90 corrector baffle shift

Posted By Carl Stanley

The baffles on the ETX are known to shift if they are left in the sun, or other hot place. If the warrenty has expired on the ETX it's not too difficult to fix. Just remove the front lens of the ETX, pull off the baffle, re-align it in the center and glue it back down.
