telescope virgin seeks grab-n-go for 1st night

Posted By Daniel Unger

hello all,
im a newbie to the fascinating world of telescopes,
tho have done my homework,
and read most introductory websites on the subject,
got binos,
and learned the sky basics.

i live in a big polluted city (atlanta),
in a small apt,
and am thinking about getting my 1st telescope.

but,
most important factor is that it is a grab-n-go scope w/ a top image,
so:
- dont care so much about price (with limits on the $1000),
- dont want something heavy, that takes time to assemble, to cool, to collimate, to align, to pick on a gps...
- dont want GOTO/electronic features, rather spend it on a better image.

so dobsonians,
the usual scope for virgins,
are out for me.

what should i go to?

newbie regrets

Posted By Daniel Unger

last month i paid $12 to join astromart's forum,
but deeply regret it:
most forum updates are on the subject of religion !

to those that answered my brief question in the beginner's section,
i am deeply thankful,
but it is obvious that,
aside from being free,
cloudy nights' quality and quantity of discussions
is light years ahead.

ps.
i dont mean to be disrespectful,
but i always thought that observing the heavens,
would sooner or later trigger some curiosity about physics or geology (perhaps biology?),
even to those with no former background in either,
but to my surprise,
one finds biblical "astronomers" in here.
oh well,
then again,
newton loved his bible...

1st humble question

Posted By Daniel Unger

Dear Friends,

I have a question:
Is there a risk that a christian (who reads the bible) could go bananas at a star party by following Numbers 31:17-18 ?

17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

2nd humble question

Posted By Daniel Unger

i was reading on Mark 16:17-18,

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover;

is it true that believers will get rid of the copperheads,
heal my kids' step throat,
and on top of that,
drink a glass of drano (that i'll bring) and be unscathed ?
boy,
am i anxy to go to a star party here in the south...

3rd humble question

Posted By Daniel Unger

If my wife finds out that im about to buy a $500+ televue ethos,
she'll be pissed,
may i throw her a Timothy 2:11-12 ?

11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.
12 do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.

and if then,
she behaves like Jael (Judges 5:24-27)

Most blessed of women is Jael,
The wife of Heber the Kenite;
Most blessed is she of women in the tent.
25"He asked for water and she gave him milk;
In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds.
26"She reached out her hand for the tent peg,
And her right hand for the workmen's hammer.
Then she struck Sisera, she smashed his head;
And she shattered and pierced his temple.
27"Between her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay;
Between her feet he bowed, he fell;
Where he bowed, there he fell dead.

she won't be blessed will she ?

5th question

Posted By Daniel Unger

i read on Revelation 12 3-4

3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

i mean,
wow,
a pregnant woman in space?
you know that baby of hers won't be able to replenish his calories after such arduous effort of kicking a 3rd of the stars...
any idea at what speed the dragon will kick these stars ?
are they mostly from the milkyway or from other constellations too ?
isnt a 3rd of them too much work?
given a more miserable and colder asteroid could wipe out all life w/out having to burn your tail?
what is the dragon made of to be able to withstand such temperatures?
when he kicks, does he consider the way gravity will bend the trajectory ?
at what speed can it travel to be able to concert this penalty kick fest ?

telescope virgin seeks grab-n-go for 1st night

Posted By Daniel Unger

in the meantime,
i've been naughty:
yes, i confess,
been flirtatious w/ many scopes that fit my tastes (small, great image, next to no maintenance or setup time),
1st it was the refractors,
especially those small new triplet ED orions,
so cute,
but everyone tells me an 80mm wont get a beginner even into the preliminaries,
besides, it's too expensive for a 1st,
like a fancy car for a 16yo,
not a good move,
so i moved on,
lately i have my eyes on a Vixen VMC110L,
which apparently (correct me if im wrong),
cools down quickly and needs collimation infrequently,
but i keep comparing it to the orion apexes (102 or 127),
and think i could fall for them too,
tho am more worried about cool time.
any insight here?
as i wait,
i'll eat chocolates and read novels about the ole south,
im also thankfull for y'all's input,
and intend to follow and research thru.

1st humble question

Posted By Daniel Unger

william,
i thought those verses were divine command,
the context being a mass massacre,
a war document that orders the killing of children and women should be, hmm, classified....
but wait,
what about

Psalm 137:9
9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

i mean,
"happy" ?

Atheists More Distrusted Than...

people named "dave" more distrusted than paedophiles/murderers or rapists.
i dont know, though.

what do you think of that headline (followed by your brilliant comment) ?

this is the kind of retarded bs that should be moderated. you think that following your hateful headline with "i dont know" makes it ok? seriously, fu.
