Photoshop Elements??

Posted By Stephen Winston

Has anyone had any experience with Adobe Photoshop Elements? Does it have enough features to make it useful for astro image editing? If not, what is it missing?

I'm new to this CCD imaging game - just managed to take my first picture of Saturn with a Philips Vesta webcam last night. I'd like to play about with processing the images, but I don't want to spend $600 on Photoshop to do it :-)

thanks,

Steve

AstroZap vs Meade dew shields

Posted By Stephen Winston

Hi,

I'm in the market for a rigid dew shield for my LX200 and I'm wondering if anyone has had direct experience with the AstroZap or Meade ones? Does anyone know which one is heavier? Are they both made of aluminium? Which one has better flocking on the inside?

thanks!

First Mars attempt - Oct 6th

Posted By Stephen Winston

This is my first attempt at imaging Mars. I tried both RGB and IR. The seeing was fairly soft (maybe 6 out of 10), but it was interesting to see the added detail captured in the IR image. I've a long way to go to catch up with the rest of you guys, but it sure is fun trying :-).

Details: 500 frames each, 18" Starmaster, TuCam Pro, Baader IR bandpass.

Question on using monochrome cameras

Posted By Stephen Winston

For those of you using high-speed monochrome cameras: When you image using separate LRGB filters, how long do you capture a sequence for? On Mars, for example, I currently capture up to two minutes and don't capture any more because of planet rotation. If you are capturing four separate streams. Do you cut your capture time in four? Must you also quickly switch filters between runs?

Just curious.

thanks!

Saturn, Feb 9th, 2006

My first of the season - finally had some clear skies here on the west coast :-). Unfortunately the seeing was only mediocre (despite what the CSC was predicting :-<). 18" Dob, 4x Powermate.

Piggybacking at1010 to 8"LX200 question on ring st

Hi Scott,

If you're planning to guide then 3-point mounting rings are probably a better idea as you will then be able to adjust where the guide scope is pointing to allow you to find/center guide stars.

LX200 12" weight

Posted By Stephen Winston

I have a 12" LX200 and I set it up by myself all the time. It is heavy, but with some careful lifting it's manageable (I'm 6"2 and 190lbs, but I'm certainly no body-builder :-). I can't remember the exact weights but I think the tripod comes in around 50lbs and the OTA is closer to 70...

I have the soft carry-case which makes it a lot easier to haul around and I have one of those Peterson additions for the top of the tripod which is a must-have to help center the fork base on the tripod.

As always, the only way to be sure is to try-before-you-buy. Anyone you know already have one that you could help set-up?

Damian, I'm surprised Celestron aren't knocking on your door to hand you a C14! Images of the quality you produce have got to be worth a lot of advertising dollars to them!

Incredible stuff!
