A. Jaegers

Posted By Steve Nightingale

I've noticed in the D&G thread a few references to A. Jaegers. As a teenager in 1967-1968 I worked at Jaegers as my "after school" job. It was an intense and amazing place for a budding amateur telescope maker to work!

I've been thinking of writing an article to recount those years; including the day Al Jaeger Sr. put me in charge of the lens polishing machines (a disaster), "hammer fights" between the Cuban immigrant workers (I'm serious!), and my lunch hours spent with Al as he talked to me about lens design.

With a little encouragement, I may actually get it done! Would there be a place to post this on AMart??

TV Powermate?

Posted By Steve Nightingale

Hi!

Last night I was out using my new AP130 Gran Tourismo. Extremely cold and clear, but the air was surprisingly steady. My usual routine is to take a look at the trapezium for E & F; E was easy but I had trouble with F.

The point is; my shortest FL eyepiece is 6mm, giving only 140X in this scope. Conditions were screaming for MORE POWER!!

So I was thinking today of looking for a shorter FL eyepiece, or a 2X Powermate.

In my collection I have AP SPLs of 6, 8, and 10 mm, which would give me 3, 4 and 5. Although I have astigmatism, I can leave my glasses off at these short FL's.

So, do you think the Powermate would degrade these in any way? Should I look for some shorter FL eyepieces, or would you recommend the Powermate? Your experiences are solicited!

(as an afterthought, I also have a 12mm SPL. Doing a comparison with my 6mm, and 12mm + Powermate, would be interesting!)

Thanks,

Steve

Ethos redundancy?

Posted By Steve Nightingale

Hi Folks,

Looking over my eyepiece case today and got to thinking about duplicate (or close) eyepiece focal lengths I have. What got me thinking is that I'd like to add another Ethos or two; I'm the kind of guy who can usually squirrel away 100 bucks or so every month to get an occasional astro toy---so selling a couple things would move things along.

For example, I have the 17 Ethos and the 18 Radian; I haven't actually taken the time, or had the weather, (yet) to really compare them. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the Radian should go?

If I was able to get the 21 Ethos, should my Orion 22mm Superwide (65 degrees, 20mm eye relief) go?

If you had a 10 Ethos, would you sell your 10mm Radian?

I do wear eyeglasses, and do enjoy the long eye relief eyepieces. OTOH, I enjoy my 17 Ethos and don't mind moving my head around to get it all in.

Certainly eyepieces are a personal preference, but I would enjoy the insights some of you might have!

Thanks,

Steve

TV Powermate?

Oops, it's "Gran Turismo". You'd think after waiting 8 years I could spell it correctly. Roland, could you name your next line of scopes something like "Bob"? grin Thanks in advance,

Steve

Ethos redundancy?

Posted By Steve Nightingale

Hey guys,

Just remembered I have another 18mm---a Criterion 18mm "A.R." ("achromatized ramsden")which came with my Criterion RV-6 back in the 60's.

Maybe I should get rid of my 17mm Ethos.........

Back when I was in high school and got the RV-6, that was my "wide field" eyepiece! What did I know?

Celestron's 14-inch EdgeHD

I was very interested in the review. The first thing I look for in a review is how the scope was obtained---purchased anonymously, borrowed, etc.

The sample reviewed was "supplied by Celestron".

Oh well.
