OT-Eclipse Viewing in Egypt

Posted By Kreig McBride

My apology to this group for the slighty off topic subject.

Is anyone traveling to Egypt for the Eclipse, or know of a small private group making plans for observing there? I would prefer not to travel alone on this trek.

Thanks, Kreig McBride

BinoMite White Light Binocular which one to buy

Posted By Kreig McBride

Considering the purchase of the BinoMite White Light Binocular or BinoMite II. Wanted to purchase the larger model (bigger is better), but thinking about portability for a trip through Egypt. Anyone see any real advantages of the extra 2x and larger aperture for the BinoMite II?

where to buy a 12-14" achromat?

Posted By Kreig McBride

Any recommendations on where to purchase a 12-14" achromat? D&G makes up to 12" and dont know about others. Not interested in paying out a million bucks for an apo of similar size. Any thoughts about China or Russia?

large mak/newts

Posted By Kreig McBride

I am curious about the performance of larger mak/newts, 12" and up. In a past thread in the refractors forum it was stated the big problem with a large mak/nwet would be cooling of the thick corrector plate. One person with very considerable optical and practicle knowledge stated that the real problem was cooling of the primary mirror.

So, with proper cooling (moving air across the face of the primary mirror to disrupt the heated boundary layer) can a large make/newt perform????

I love my 6" f/6 mak/newt and looking for both aperture And refractor like images.

tube thickness calculations

Posted By Kreig McBride

Building up a long scope and needing to know dimensions for pipe. Assuming 20 pounds at each end of an aluminum tube 170" long and about 11 inches ID and supported at the center (balance point). What size tubing (wall thickness) do I need? Or what formulas needed to figure this out?? I would assume most tubing is 6061????

Also where to buy??? The lens cell is 10 7/8" OD.

Thanks in advance.

reducers - wider fields

Posted By Kreig McBride

Needing a wider field of view than either a 56mm plossl or a 41mm Panoptic can provide. Are there any QUALITY reducers that could give me a wider field of view? Are there other options? I assume longer focal length eyepieces would require more than a 2" focusing unit.

41mm Panoptic provides a 0.6 degree FOV with 2.4mm exit pupil at 105X.

Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

router bit - wood tubes

Posted By Kreig McBride

Seems to me that there are router bits made to cut profiles into the edges of wood to make up wood tubes. The router bit only cuts one edge leaving a "corner" for the next plank to fit into place. They come in a variety of "sides". I cant find them on anyones website. Any ideas or suggestions for where to locate?

Thanks, Kreig

mounting a large doublet

Posted By Kreig McBride

In the mail today was a large diameter refractor doublet in cell. Problem is it is only an aluminum ring, no mounting areas, no pre-drilled holes, nothing but a ring. So my question is: How to mount this ring and make an adjustable cell? Any thoughts and design ideas appreciated.

calculating field of view

Posted By Kreig McBride

Using Televue's eyepiece calculator, I will get a 0.8 degree field of view using the 41mm Panoptic. What would my FOV be if the 41mm Panoptic were added to a 4X Powermate? It would give me 329.6X

Aperture: 254mm
FL: 3,378.2mm

refractor tubing -sizes, tube currents, etc.

Posted By Kreig McBride

Have finally decided to use aluminum tubing for the 10" doublet. Have several choices, 10" or 12" diameter tubing.

10" tubing, cheaper, lighter, and will fit an existing equatorial mounting. 10" tubing comes very close to the edge of the light path near the doublet.

12" tubing, more expensive, heavier, stronger, needing a new mount, new worries about tube currents.

Tube wall thickness available: .064" and .094"

My biggest concern here is air currents in the 10" tubing and wall thickness.

Thoughts and recommendations please?
