Red Shouldered Hawk

Posted By Rich Guerra

On March 11th, 2007 this fellow took up residence for a few minutes on a post 15 feet outside my kitchen window. He was hunting (squirrels, field mice, rabbits). This is actually shot through the window glass.

Lens: Canon 75-300 EF f/ 4.0 - f/5.6 III Zoom. Camera: Rebel XT/350D, ISO 800, 1/400 sec, lens set to f/9.0 and focal length 220mm. Shot in RAW, developed to a TIF using Canon DPP with a sharpening factor of 5 and daylight white balance. Very slight smart sharpening in PS CS2. Cropped in CS2 and converted to a jpg. Ran through Noiseware community edition with mild film grain noise reduction. Back into CS2 for a slight increase in the black level. Resized to 600x470 for posting.

Hi Nathan,

I agree with everyone that the 90mm f/11.4 scope is not the problem. I've spent many nights with an 80mm f/11.4 and seen great views of DSO's. However, if the Polaris uses 0.965" eyepieces you will have a very limited selection of focal lengths to choose from. Also, eye relief will in general be poor.

For a limited investment of <$30 you can get a star diagonal that is 0.965" on the telescope end and 1.25" on the eyepiece end. Meade and Orion have them in their catalogs. If you can only afford one more eyepiece now, shoot for a 32mm Plossl (<$50).
