Improving a dobsonian azimuth movement

Posted By allan servoss

Hi out there,

I have an old 8" Celestron dob mount which is quite servicable except for the azimuth (right/left?) movement. It has a tendency to stick. It only becomes a problem when I use higher powers, but can be quite frustrating. I have teflon pads on the rotating part of the mount, but they are riding on the painted wood of the stationary platform. What can I do to "smooth it out"?

Thanks...Allan S.

Improving an azimuth mount

Posted By allan servoss

Hi out there!

I just wanted to thank all of you who gave me advice on smoothing out the azimuth movement on my old dosonian rocker box. I am currently hunting down a piece of laminate. In the meantime, I sprayed the contacting surface with teflon spray and that alone has helped considerably. Thanks again all! -allan s.

CG5 mount questions

Posted By allan servoss

Hi out there. I have a CG5 mount which I picked up aboput 6 or 7 years ago. Mainly it's been in storage. I tried to sell it, but no takers, so I've decided to keep it and am going to use it. It seems like a fine, very smooth working mount. I have heard that one should take these things all apart and regrease them and replace bearings, ect. and this all sounds like a major overhaul to me. Can anyone tell me why this should be done if everything seems to be working well.

on my knees

Posted By allan servoss

Hi out there!

I hope this isn't a "dumb" question, but does anyone have a technique for observing through their refractor ( I have a 120mm equatorially mounted) that doesn't entail being on one's hands and knees on frosty grass to observe objects towards the zenith?

Thanks, allan

collimating a refractor

Posted By allan servoss

Hi out there,
. I need some information. I have a C4 with adjustable objective cell and it is slightly out of collimation. I am reluctant to mess with the three screws provided on the cell until I know what I'm in for. Can someone help me out here?
