New C6 Plastic Parts Opinions

Posted By Mark Webb

I was all set to order one of these new cats, but upon further research I found out that plastic is used on rear and some other places. Tube is aluminum but rear is plastic. That's a turn-off to me - but is it OK? Is the plastic not a problem?

Need Info on Vixen PL PLossls

Posted By Mark Webb

The Vixen PL Series Plossl Eyepieces seem to be very inexpensive (like $24 bucks) - are they any good? Are they really high quality Japanese optics? Or, are they cheap Taiwanese just equal to other lower-priced budget moderate performance eps. Vixen is supposed to be a high end brand of optic- how are these plossls?

I am interested in buying a set for high-power use, but if they are just el cheapo eps I'll pass. Let me know - thanks.

BTW, my use will be with a 1.25" or 2" diagonal and new Celestron C6S SCT on planets as well as DSO like globulars. I already have a 2" WA ep - I need some more power now and was interested in the Vixens mainly for 1) name and 2) price. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Lack of Interest?

Posted By Mark Webb

Someone else wrote that 80mm is a great aperture for a fast scope - but f/11? Planetary??? I don't think much market research was done on this scope's viability. I watched with interest the disaster BO created with the first set of refractors that were discontinued after a short 2 years or so. I would have thought BO would now be very cautious of creating a new scope/sourcing prouction in Asia, etc. We'll see what happens.

Maybe the thought is the market is flooded with excellent quality wide field fast 80-90mm achromat scopes (SV and WO) and there is a niche for a quality 80mm slow scope. But with his last fiasco, this is just very very iffy. I just don't know.

Read that BO will be introducing his 80MM F/11 Planetary refractor...he's already hyping this as being able to maintain ridiculously high power (shocking...this guy cannot control himself)..I frankly don't see allot of interest in this type of scope. Any comments.

A little rant about refractor postings on Astromar

yeah, when mint ex + TV 102s have been listed recently for $1,600 and they sell new for $2,300 I'd say it a buyers market right now !!!

Reccomendations for a visual APO 4"-5"

Posted By Mark Webb

The TV 102 would be an excellent scope for your purposes. It is the standard by which others are measured. It's been around for several years so it's a proven design. And they are readily available used or new - no waiting period after order.

The SV scope would also be a good choice (and several $$ less expensive than the TV). I tried to order one but none were in stock. I believe that one could be built for you, though, if you could wait a few weeks after your order.
