Where to live around LA for dark skies?

Posted By Chris Dyess

I live in Woodland Hills with the Santa Monica Mountains fairly close by. Beyond the mountains, to the west, is the ocean so it is certainly darker here than most places around LA. The mountains block much of the fog. Try the southern reaches of Woodland Hills or Calabasas in the hills. Not sure what you price range is because this area is fairly expensive.

So what's the problem with Meade????

Posted By Chris Dyess

I have owned a NGPS 11 and recently purchased a LX200 14" from Meade. I guess I am lucky because I have had zero problems. I am/was very pleased with both scopes. Both have their pros and cons and could do things better. No one is perfect. I have no complaints. All of this Meade bashing is a bunch of crap... both companies have their service issues (read the yahoo groups). I own a late model Porsche and BMW, believe me they have issues, but the driving experience is not diminished. Get real.

Meade is publicly traded. They have to make quarterly #'s. Coronado was probably going out of business. Get real people... this is a business... yeah there are better scopes... someday (hopefully soon)I'll get a RC or some other 20k++ setup. Until then I can deal with Meade and/or Celestron and be very satisfied. You get what you pay for and you have a choice where to spend your money.

Pentax 40 XW?

Posted By Chris Dyess

Was considering a Panoptic 41 but based on my positive experience with the 20mm XW I purchased the 40mm XW 2 last weekend. My scope is a LX200 14". Great views, edge-to-edge. Expensive, but worth it. I also have a 31mm Nagler.

14"LX200GPS - UHTC

Posted By Chris Dyess

I have a LX200 14 and use Starry Night Pro (4.5) to guide it. Works great and is a big improvement over the HC. Use the serial port (or USB with adapter/converter) and plug it into the serial port on the LX200 base. Make sure your location (lat and log) and time are set to what the GPS gives you. This setup is very easy and accurate.

Celestron CGE 1400 or Meade 14" GPS.

Posted By Chris Dyess

I just went through this in September and ended up with the Meade 14 inch. I put the Meade on the JMI wheely bars so I never have to do setups. Just wheel it out when I want to use it. I traded up from a N11 GPS. Went with the Meade because of some of the negative things I had read about the celestron software. Also wanted a F10 versus a F11, wanted the GPS (though it stays put), wanted a fork mount and the price was cheaper. You can't go wrong with either one.

New Meade Superwedge

Posted By Chris Dyess

Don't know about the RCX400 Superwedge... but the 14" Superwedge has the same problems as the 12" version. The 14" version has another plate added to it other than that it has the same specs. I just ordered a Mitty and will receive it on Friday.
