US exit strategy from Iraq

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

I see that the media is now reporting that the Bush administration is now "frantically looking" (behind the scenes) for a quick exit strategy from Iraq. This confirms, of course, that the Bush decision to invade Iraq was the right thing to do in the first place, given the grave threat SH was, with all his stockpiles of WMDs.

Terror Alert Level: YELLOW ELEVATED

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

What are we supposed to do about it? Seriously. Be on the alert? For what?

What's the purpose of these alerts, if there are no rational actions we can take?

Is the idea behind the alert levels to frighten us, so we support the current administration's policies?

This propaganda method has been used before in other countries, to incite populations to support wars.

Brandon Vernonscope

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

I have a couple of old Brandon Vernonscope eyepieces that have screw-on rubber eye/light shields. The rubber has a strange odor, sort of like iodine. I tried washing them, but the odor remains. Does anyone know what this is, or if replacements can be obtained, or how I can get rid of the odor?

60 Minutes Woodward Interview

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

Did anybody see the Woodward interview on 60 Minutes today?
Our President evidently believes he is on a mission from God, to spread democracy throughout the world. He said his mission is historic, and is to be the most important event of the 21st century.

It reminded me of Belushi and Ackroyd in the old Blues Brothers movie, who were also on a mission from God, except in Bush's case it isn't a comedy. This kind of mentality/thinking, by our President, is downright scary.

Woodward asked him how he thought history would judge him. Bush's answer was that it didn't matter, because "...we'll all be dead..."

Calls for Rumsfeld to resign

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

The largest newspaper in Arizona, The Arizona Republic, today called for Rumsfeld to resign. They also said that Wolfowitz should not be considered as his replacement.

The Arizona Republic has been a long time supporter of Bush, and most of his policies.

Are any other newspapers calling for Rumsfield to throw in the towel?

Couch Potato Clinton

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

I see that the news media is reporting that Hillary had Bill banned to the couch for over two months after his affair with Monica. Just think about it, the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, sleeping on a couch because his wife booted him from the bedroom. This is what makes America great. No one is above the law, or a woman's wrath...

God Bless America.

Gaza Strip Withdrawl by Israelis

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

There's been a lot of recent coverage in the news, about the Israeli evacuation from the Gaza strip.

There are 1.3 million Palistinians living in the Gaza strip. A total of 8000 Israeli settlers also lived there until recently; they are now being moved out by the Israeli government.

Israel is apparently soon going to be compensated by the US government to the amount of 3 billion dollars for the Gaza pullout, over and above some 2 billion going to Israel for other reasons (per CNN news).

This amounts to $375,000 for each Israeli man, woman, and child leaving the Gaza.

So, every Israeli married couple, with one child leaving the Gaza, will be millionaire families.

Your tax dollars at work....

Storm/Hurricane Costs

Posted By jaroslav zaharchuk

When will people learn? The gulf coast is prone having terrible storms like Katrina. There will be more storms like Katrina, some weaker, some stronger, guaranteed. This hurricane alone will cost American taxpayers billions upon billions.

I cannot imagine living in a city like New Orleans, where the streets are below sea level.

FEMA has been warning for years of the great risk there.

Why should the U.S. government essentially be subsidizing the people living in these areas, especially those very near the coast? The subsidies come in many forms - massive Army Corps of Engineers construction projects, massive relief expenses, emergency rescue expenses by government agencies of all sorts, temporary housing/shelter, expenses, etc., etc., etc....

Would in not make sense for the Federal government to declare such coastal areas as 'danger zones', and anyone choosing to live there would in the future be doing so entirely at their own risk, and not being eligible any future federal aid?

If the states chose to promote developing these coastal areas, perhaps they could assume the risk, and tax the residents and businesses in a manner so as to cover expenses associated with rebuilding after such storms occur in the future.

What are your views on this?
