$500 EP Advice

Posted By Justin De Guire

I got about $500 saved to spend on eyepieces and I have been researching my self silly. I have read so many pros and cons that I am not sure what to spend my money on. So my question is if you had $500 to spend, what eyepieces would you get? I have an 10" Dob f/5 and 5" f/12.1 Mak. I know there are good deals on astromart but I would like to buy a new set of EPs. Thanks

True Field Of View

Posted By Justin De Guire

I was calculating the true field of view for each of my eyepieces using this formula.

True Field of View = Magnification / Apparent Field of view

Example 32mm Plossl with 50 degrees of apparent field of view
Scope’s focal length 1250mm.
1250 / 32 yields a magnification of 39.06. Plug the magnification into the formula above.
1.28 = 39.06 / 50 True field of view is 1.28

And then I realized does this formula apply to 2 inch eyepieces? Because if you had 2 32mm eyepieces and both had the same exact apparent field of view but one was 2 inches and the other 1 1/4” they both give you the same true field of view. But shouldn’t the 2 inch eyepiece have a great true field of view? I know the above formula is not precise for calculating this value but it should be close. If I am missing something please excuse the ignorant question. Thanks

TeleVue 55mm Advice

Posted By Justin De Guire

I am looking at the TV 55mm 2" Plossl eyepiece and I am wondering how that would match up with my 10" dob f/5 1250mm. I did some initial research and I have heard some people talk about the exit pupil being an issue and then some people say that EP works great. I really enjoy the TV Plossls. Just looking for some advice / comments on that EP. thanks
