Apogee Widescan

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Hi, I just purchased a Apogee widescan eyepeice 32mm 2" 70 deg FoV from their website for $70.
I asked the sales rep what widescan model it was and he said the first one, not the II or III. He said they do not carry the II and III's anymore because the eyepeices were of low quality and had major problems. Is their any truth behind this, or is it just a nonesense excuse?
Has anyone tried or have a original widescan? how does it perform? and what are the pro's and con's between the original and the II's and III's. Thanks guys

Low power worthwhile?

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Hi, I just purchased a 32mm Wide feild (70 deg) [my max exit pupil] eyepeice. I bought it because I wanted to experience the spacewalk-porthole effect that lots of big fast dob users love. Well I have a f/4.5 16" dob and don't really experience the spacewalk effect and was wondering is 70 deg Afov too little? The only thing that I experience is less resolution than my plossls in M13 and M31. What are the benefits to low mag. eyepeices? Thanks for your help.

Starfinder dobsonian fix

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Hi, I have a 16 in. Meade starfinder dobsonian. The teflon bearings were very sticky so I moved them down further in the mount. ( I just moved the teflon a few centimeters down.) This worked alright, but it is still sticky in near upright positions and I want it to be silky smooth with still some friction to keep it from falling down. Anyone know any way to permanently fix this problem? thanks

Collimating a f4.5 dob

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Hi, I just purchased a rigel aline tool ($8) to collimate my primary mirror. The site I ordered from said it could also be used for the secondary. I don't know if I belive this, Could this work as my only alignment tool? If not, what should I get to compliment this piece?

I have a 16 in scope at f 4.5 so I need the alignment very good.

Thanks, Marc

Tal 24 mm UWA

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Has anyone ever used this eyepiece? How is it compared to naglers and widescans? ( I know its about half the price of the nagler so I don't expect too much). I want to get a really nice semi-low power eyepiece with a huge FOV but I am on a buget, so I want to know if this is worth the money. I haven't seen one up on astromart yet so mabye they are keepers. Thanks guys

Diffraction rings

Posted By Marc DiMarco

I heard that to check proper collimation was to out focus your eyepiece on a star, and if the difraction rings are circular, then you have proper collimation. I did this and all I see is a big blur with the shadow of the vanes and the secondary in it. How do you get the difraction ring effect? thanks

NGF DX-2 focuser

Posted By Marc DiMarco

I just purchased a Dx 2 from JMI. It is a very nice focuser but still doesn't have the silky smooth focus I was hoping for. Is thier any way to make it silky smooth? The heaviest thing I use is a 32mm widescan eyepiece which seems to weigh about a pound or so I don't need too much friction. Should I have just dished out the dough and gone for the DX 1 with dual rate? thanks for the help.

Planetary ghosting

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Whenever I view mars lately at relativly high powers ~180x, I see two images, one much dimmer than the first. When I get the focus precise, it Almost goes away but never completely. My first instinct was internal reflections because the second was dimmer, but I think it has to do with the collimation. What would cause this? secondary misalignment or primary? It could also be the focuser.. Anyone know how to square the focuser perfectly? thanks
