HEQ5 on Meade Tripod

Posted By Steven Choi

Hello All,

I have modified the HEQ5 to mount on a Meade tripod. With the mount head, scope and weight, it is about 60 lbs and the original tripod feel filmsy. With the Meade tripod, it is solid as a rock and yet still portable. I have not have a chance to observe with it yet because of bad weather here in Toronto.

What is "self etching primer" and its advantage ? Is it easily available through general hardware store ?

Where is Astigmatism ?

Posted By Steven Choi

Hello All,

A Mak with three optical components (corrector, primary and secondary) that have astigmatism when viewed at the eyepiece, how do one knows which optical components that contributes to this astigmatism ? This is assuming that the diagonal, eyepiece and the observer eye is free of astigmatism.

Thanks.

Lousy Seeing ... Or bad collimation?

Posted By Steven Choi

Hello Darren,

I am at southern Ontario and observed the same problem except for the diamond shape. It must have been bad seeing.

Anyone used an HEQ5?

Posted By Steven Choi

When I receieved the mount, there is some play on both the RA and DEC axis. After adjusting the worm and gear mesh, there's no noticeable play on both axis. At high power 700X, their is very noticeable "jumpiness" at first but it was fixed after adjusting the mesh between the motor and worm shaft gear. After the adjustment, short time exposure astrophotography is not a problem. However, for long time exposure astrophotography the PE could be a problem. So in summary, this mount is good for someone that meets the following :-

a- on a tight budget for a medium duty GEM mount.
b- know how to adjust and finetune the mount.
c- not planning on long time exposure astrophotography.

I am very satisfied with this mount that I am planning to upgrade the tripod with those of Meade or Celestron adjustable field tripod. The original tripod is not a good match for what the HEQ5 mount can deliver, IMHO.

May Need a Part Made for Equitorial Mount

Posted By Steven Choi

Hi Lynn,

If you have a drill and saw, cut two rectangle out of aluminium stock bar (or hardwood) of the same thickness as the raised edge and drill a center 1/4" hole. Using approriate length 1/4"-20 bolts, bolt both the rectangle and dovetail saddle ( as shown by John ) together. The rectangle act like a thick washer. Hope it helps.
